Ok guyz,

Everybody from Spark "on down"

What is up with every knife maker on the planet being so ashamed of thier product that they have to ink stamp the info on a knife instead of using a computerised laser or mechanical engraving system on the blanks etc.

I know this may cost a company a few cents more a blade, but if i have to polish a knife after a hunt, storage etc...i want my knife to still have the "Spark Inc." etc w/out it smearing, fading whatever.

These mfgrs. can't even get the ink straight in line w/ the grind angles...ink blots may be cheaper but i'd pay a few buck more for a knife w/ a properly engraved ricasso...at least tatoo the blade so that sorry smudgie crap wont come off...what do you guys think...? thanks mark

I have no idea what you are talking about. I've never had a knife that has any info inked onto the blade. It is either laser engraved, machined, or etched.

For me, it's kind of an advantage. I don't particularly like blade etches or logos on my knives and I
find a couple of minutes with some Semichrome will remove the "ink blot" forever. My GEC #65
looks much better without the smear....

Same here.......
Can you post a picture? I've never seen ink on a knife blade.

There are special inks which chemically bond with the blade steel on some knives. It's a process known as "pad printing".

I like it on cheaper knives since I can buff the "made in China" off. ;)

You learn something new everyday. I have honestly never seen our heard of this. Interesting.

Like A.G. said in another thread, buying your knives in gas stations will do that for you. Try spending more than $10 and see what you get.

The only knives I have with this sort of logo are from GEC and Case. I think the GEC 440c knives have the logo
laser etched onto the blade, but the 1095 blades I have (#65, #33, #25) all have the ink, paint or whatever it
is. I have a Case trapper that has the same stuff. As mentioned previously, at least it comes off quite easily.

None of these are "gas station" quality knives...

only knife iv ever seen with something like that is a stanley folding box cutter that i got for like 5$ that has insructions painted on it to how to change the blades that wore off.

Come on now, this isn't at all rare, nor confined to gas station junk. Every one of my Kershaws has the brand etc either inked on, or in cases where it's a coated blade (like my ZT), the brand and other info is uncoated, sort of "reverse ink". The Spyderco logo is ink, in many cases other info is inked on the blade as well. This doesn't bother me, but it isn't rare.

Have you guys never seen Spydercos or Kershaws?

i've never seen a knife with the logo not etched laser engraved or stamped?? didnt know there were ink stamps being used, sounds really cheap.

On the assumption we live on the same planet, have you never seen the laser etched lines in the Spyderco Bug?

um.... yeah and they are laser etched!? what are you thinking?

all spyderco are laser and i am pretty sure all kershaws above $20 bucks are laser to. i think your assumption that these brands are ashamed of their products that they stand behind is one of..if not the most ridiculous comments that i have seen on this forum sir

I have never in my entire life seen a production knife from any company with markings that weren't permanently etched into the blade.

(Most of the time I do wish I could just wipe it off though.)

Agreed.

Here's an example of a GEC Tidioute Congress with 1095 blade steel. I don't know how these logos are applied but they wipe right off with the greatest of ease. About five or six swipes with some semichrome and it's gone.

BRB, going to the gas station to get some GECs. Can anyone break a $20?

I think the terms "electro-etched" and "ink" are getting confused here....

Frech "Douk Douk" knives have a similar type of printed patterning on the blade.

What?! Yes, I own many Kershaw, Spydercos, and a few ZT's and none of them have any info put on the blade in the manner you are describing. Laser engraving or etching is what I've seen on these knives. Show me a YouTube video of someone wiping away the information that is laser engraved on a spyderco blade. I'll believe it when I see it.
