The Ink Blotter Problem...

I will admit to confusing laser etching with ink (D'OH!)but nothing in my post suggested Spyderco or Kershaw are ashamed of their products. Quite the contrary, I was pointing out that the phenomenon of stuff written on the blade (whether etched or ink) was not confined to gas station junk. It honestly doesn't matter to me what method is used to put brand names, product #'s etc on the knife, I buy the knife not the etching or ink.

Who gives a fudge what gets stamped on the blade, or how it's done? I honestly never put much thought into what gets written/stamped/etched/painted onto a knife's blade...

I would be concerned if I bought a higher end Spyderco, ZT, or Kershaw and the information on the blade started to run and wash away. I'd be thinking I have a fake. The info isn't really important, but if you know a company laser engraves their info and you have a model that is written in Sharpie, this may throw up a red flag.

Agreed.

Here's an example of a GEC Tidioute Congress with 1095 blade steel. I don't know how these logos are applied but they wipe right off with the greatest of ease. About five or six swipes with some semichrome and it's gone.

That is some of the best news I have heard in a long time. I had no idea. I kept thinking, why the hell did they go and ruin a perfectly nice knife with all that fanfare?

While someone else's banner, crest, or stylistic and insignificant ramblings scrolled along the blade wouldn't matter to me if I NEEDED the blade for use, whilst I have the choice I will reserve my taste and only buy blades for my personal carry that are not permanently Graffiti-ed with someones cockerdoodle-mamia.

Gentlemen: I do not buy "gas station" knives.

I can understand from a military standpoint wanting a "sterile" blade.

If youve been a knife collector for 30 years as I have, and never a "major production brand" knife you couldnt simply "sterilize"(remove black markings on purpose) w/ acetone, you haven't lived or collected long enough.

Im not accusing any company of some wrongdoing here,

I'm saying put your name on the knife you sell in such a manner as to show your pride in the Knife you have produced, thats all. A good example of this the
Buck 120 Boone and Crockett.

That crap just fuggleys up a knife to me.

Buck makes good everyday and hard-use knives, but put the printing on an enclosure in the box!!

"Pad printing" when done at off angles ruins the look of the blade etc.

If you then remove the pad printed markings, I assume it destroys collector value.

Ive seen and do own worse factory "error" knives as oddities.

I have a Spyderco SchemppRock that was perfectly ground to resemble the RockSalt H1 version. This is a VG10 blade w/ the Spyderco emblem, not the H1 marking!

On the averse side of the blade, it is ground to resemble the current factory issue.

What I aquired is a mutant version of the two knives. This "Schempp RockSalt" functions in its belt knife role as any Spyderco should. Perfectly.

In some cases "factory errors" could possibly be more collectable than thier " properly made " counterparts. IMHO.

If Im wrong I stand corrected.

Is this pad printing something that is done mote often on traditional folders? I've just never seen it before, but I've never been one for traditional knives and patterns. I admit that I don't wipe my blades down with acetone. I've never had a reason to do so. Does electrochemical etching wipe away like this?

I dont know. If its a hard use knife, maybe they should use a more durable process.

I love my Cold Steel 6in Voyager clip--it has a solid VG 1 blade...Hell and Back again EDC, but a little semichrome is all thats needed to completely remove Cold Steels name from the blade.
Then my knife LOOKS like an aftermarket piece of crap. And to beat it all, on other Voyager makes in the smaller blade sizes, they STAMPED the company name INTO THE BLADE. My wife has the baby version of this one and she uses it for every task you could think of. Polish, resharpen, happy days are here again..I shoulda bought 4 of those little knives...they're great.

There ya go--thats the stuff. I donno if its pad-Thai or pad printing..but at least you can STOMACH Thai food!! Cocker-doodle mania indeed.

Its some kind of "DOO" thats fer damn sure!!

Sure alot easier to get off a blade than the coating CS USED TO USE!

yes i realize coating and marking come from two different ideas..but there is always DuraCoat huh?
