The iPad grail

How do you print out your work?

As of right now work has to be transferred over and printed from some other device, however there is supposedly going to be (within the next month) capability to print wirelessly but I am pretty sure this will be through apples airport express. Which I already use as a wireless print setup for our laptop.

I am an apple fan through and through - bought the first gen iphone, and upgraded to the 3gs when my contract ran out. In the last five years, between my fiance and I, we have owned eight macs.

And I'm still not sold on the ipad.

Don't get me wrong - it is a cool device and has a lot of potential. But I'm not willing to accept the Apple lock-in. The lack of peripheral compatibility, draconian restrictions on apps for the app store, and lack of basic features like a front-facing camera have kept me away from it.

iphone OS 4 looks to at least partially fix some of the issues with the ipad, but not enough of them to get me to buy it. I'll likely end up with an Android or even Windows based tablet at some point - the Apple lock-in and insistence on complete control over your device is just too big of a turn off at this point. I was willing to accept that for a cell phone, but for something that's a lot more like a portable computer, I want more control.

I know I have some people thinking I am nuts for buying the first gen. However one thing that all you pc users fail to realize is that macs hold their value EXTREMELY well. My 4 year old macbooc was purchased for 1100 and to date the things setup exactly the same were fetching around $600. So I owned a laptop that did everything I ever asked and to date 5 plus years without a single hiccup for $125 a year. When the second gen stuff comes out if it is worth it to upgrade I will probably take a $150 hit but I was caught in a situation where my wides laptop died. So it was either do a MacBook pro for $1200 or this. Also for those outdoor guys out there I have found a very sweet fungus identification App with help for what is edible and what isn't. Also found another animal scat and track ID app that is pretty cool. Also they are talking of releasing college textbooks on this very soon and as far as the iBook reader it kept me occupied for 2 hours yesterday. I was reading a new release book that is only out in hardback for $30 and I picked it up on here for $9.99. This is certainly not a do it all machine however this bridges the gap and then some for most of peoples needs. The keyboard is odd for the first several days but give it time and it gets pretty fast.
What's the point of it holding it's value well when you're paying like $500 for a half eaten apple, my 4 year old CPU from 2006 (E6400 core 2 duo; worth less than 50bucks now) is stock 2.13ghz but running overclocked at 3ghz compared to the $2000 mac which has a core 2 duo 3.06ghz CPU which you CANNOT overclock, my computer has a $120 Nvidia 250GTS which out performs the ATI 4670 in a $2000 computer, the same 4gb of ram for $100 aswell, and 1TB HD for $90..........You can also play lego with the parts, my computer case is from like 1999.....

Back on topic :o.

+1 to Roger
I love my original 2G iPhone and it's by far better than any windows phone IMO.
But for my home PC I much prefer windows to a Mac.
Building your own PC will give you twice the power for half the costs (or less) of a new Mac.

On topic, I don't plan on owning an iPad but it sure looks fun to play with.

I think it's safe to say...

To each his own.

EDIT: Apple released the iTampon (yes, I will forever call it that) to try to take away some of the market from netbooks. Both have their pros and cons, but I'd much rather have a keyboard than some touch screen (which you can also get on many netbooks lately). It was widely rumored that Apple was gonna release something in the spirit of netbooks, but not quite a netbook. Apple has said repeatedly that they would not release a netbook. This is their entry into the market.

I completely agree. apple makes good solid products, but their fascist holier than thou attitude toward consumers and third party developers is disgusting. You pay very premium prices for a mediocre device

I don't know what kind of experience some of you guys have been having, but I love my MacBook. I was forced to get one for my college major (Elementary Ed.) and making me do so was like pulling teeth. However, I soon found that the interface was more user-friendly, and that my programs all ran faster and with greater stability than they did on my Acer laptop which had higher stats (including double the RAM).

I enjoy the convenience of being able to play my old Playstation games on my laptop via emulator, and was disappointed to find that there were no truly good PSX emulators for Mac. All I had to do was get Crossover Games, and now I'm able to run ePSXe (a PC-only PSX emulator) on my Mac without needing Windows. And it runs FASTER. I'm using a Mac to emulate a PC to emulate a Playstation with all sorts of additional graphic-improving effects on it and it runs faster! Same for a bunch of other programs that my Windows PC (again, with higher stats than my present laptop) would have hiccups with.

Sure, Macs have their drawbacks. But they're drawbacks I can live with given the way that it's streamlined my user experience. :o

I love my macs. They are built on a rock solid base with all the trimmings of a true POSIX compliant UNIX, have a phenomenal GUI, and one of the best development environments I've ever used, with all the power of the full GNU suite, but few of the headaches.

I wish the ipad was more like my macs - while a lot of PC people complain that macs aren't as customizable or lock the user out, it's just plain false. The only systems I've used which were more customizable or gave the user more power than OS X were linux.

It's a shame that the iphone/ipad, which are built on the same darwin kernel and unix tools as OS X, are so locked down, and so driven on removing choice from both the consumer and the developer. I understand why Apple does it, and they even have some valid points to justify their reasoning. But I still hate it.

I personally waiting for an Android version. I have a Google Nexus One and over all really like it. Might as well keep it in the family as it were.

My wife is holding out for a 3G version, and my uncle is setting my grandma up with a wifi version to run her iTunes throughout the house. She likes to crank Ella and Duke!

I think the biggest value for my wife will be the ability to run back-to-back movies on airplanes with one battery. With no DVD drive to run, they will truly get 10+ hours of usage on a single battery. She travels a lot for work.

There's an Apple store in my neighborhood so I've been playing around with the display models. The basic product is very nice, but I'd like a "rubberized" back and edges instead of the slick, brushed metal. It seems a little too heavy for what it is. The egros aside, I think it's a great product idea. I don't think of it as a replacement for a desktop, a laptop, or a netbook; I think of it as a refinement of the old PDA's and E-Book readers. I recall a lot of poor attempts to make a good large E-Book reader that would replace magazines. This puppy could fit the bill. I'll probably wait a few years for the prices to come down and the features to go up.

I was all excited about getting one but now I think I want that slate PC that HP is coming out with. It supports flash, and I can put my itunes on it and have everything that the ipad can do plus a PC for work.
