The jackknife Challenge

May I recommend you try a Buck Solo, perhaps? Small, thin, single blade knife with a handle a bit longer then the Peanut, which allows for a better grip. Great little knife, inexpensive, and Buck quality. Can't go wrong with that.

thanks for updating this thread frequently. I know i am following it very closely because i have recently changed my edc stuff around to a similiar setup.

I do forsee myself going back to a sak in the long run and keeping a traditional too. Nothing like being a knife knut:foot::)
Glad you are enjoying the thread!

The edc thing can get as out of control as our afliction of accumulating more knives. I knw one night I emptied my pockets out on the dresser, and Karen was amazed at what was in my pockets. I took a long hard look and downsized my edc. Never missed most of it at all.

Keep it Todd.

Maybe the peanut is just wrong for your hand fit. Maybe try a swayback or small soddie.
Thanks for the encouragement, Carl. I have a CV Swayback in my EDC rotation (as well as a well used *loved* Eye Brand soddie), it is a much better fit for me. I just wanted to give the Peanut a fair chance.

I look into the Solo. Thanks!

I used my peanut to open a package containing this little Spyderco Bug. But don't worry, I'm not going to carry it until the challenge is over! :)

The cat approves of the Peanut. It works great for opening cat food bags.

Wow, Todd, that bug actually makes the 'nut look like a big knife!

How's it fit in your big paws?:D

It is a tiny dude, isn't it? Oh, by the way, it's a slipjoint!

It's a BIT small for my paws, but it's thinness make it steady to hold in a pinch grip.

Day 5, the final day, of the challenge begins!

I love Fridays because I can wear jeans to work (plus, I only work until noon).

3. The small flashlight is likely a keeper.

For me, like a pocketknife, a small keychain LED light has attained "I'm wearing pants, aren't I?" status. Meaning: If someone asks if I have one, I reply "I'm wearing pants, aren't I?" They're that handy. I buy 10 "fauxtons" for $10 and keep 'em in my sock drawer. When one gets dim, I toss it and pull out a new one.

Final thoughts:

1. For the tasks I encountered in the last 5 days, The Peanut was plenty enough knife. Seems like a fine urban pattern. Of course, if I was going out to do heavy work, I would choose a more robust knife.

2. As I mentioned before, the square-ish profile of the 'nut tended to make the knife want to roll in my hand. Either a slightly larger handle or a flatter profile would suit me better. I am going to be on the lookout for a single blade Peanut.

3. I enjoyed the light weight pocket...more than I thought I would. I wear scrubs Mon-Thur and not toting a ton of crap was great.

4. The Craftsman 4-way driver and P-38 ,even though vastly lighter in weight, are a poor substitute for my SAK (usually a Victorinox Soldier). I do a lot of maintenance at my office and the SAK just works better for me. As my needs change, I might re-evaluate choice.

5. Unless I know I'm going staying out late, I'll likely stick with the smaller flashlight.

I had a great time doing this. Mostly as an exercise in self denial. Like most of you, I carry a knife not only because I need one (read "one"), but because I love knives. Since age 5, I have carried a knife. I think about knives every day. I could do just fine in life with just my beloved Soldier, but I carry more than one because I want to.

Thanks to Carl for the encouragement and thanks to all of you who followed my rambling.

Todd

Thank you for sharing your experience with us, I found my self checking this tread a couple of times daily. :)

to be honest i'm glad to hear your thoughts about the sak. Just means i won't be alone doubling up on a couple of slippies now lol.

thanks for the great thread.
