Just got back from a once-in-a-lifetime hiking trip in the Swiss Alps, so, naturally, going through Zurich I had to check out the Victorinox store just off the Bahnhofstrasse, Zurichs main drag and reputedly one of the world's most expensive and exclusive shopping avenues: Rolex, Omega, IWC, you name it. Not to mention the Aston Martin and the 500-hp V-12 diesel Audi, just the ticket for tooling around the Alps at 160 mph. (Mind the corners.) The Victorinox store featured all of the brand's watches, luggage and, of course, a huge selection of SAKs. Surprisingly, the SAKS -- everything from the basic Alpiner (4" blade to get at the peanut butter and the essential corkscrew) to the brick-sized uber SAK with the 64 GIG hard drive (just kidding) and brain trepanning tool, were quite reasonably priced. There were displays of SAKS everywhere we went; it's surprising the Swiss haven't named Macgyver a national hero. Didn't see any FBs aside from a few cheap-looking plastic-handled tourist jobs, not even a Mora. Came across one small display of Opinels, at roughly four times what I paid in Paris last spring. I had my trusty Officer's model SAK with me and my Timex, so I passed on all the watches and SAKS, not without a tinge of regret. Besides, this trip and the last ate up the next couple of year's knife budgets.Oh, well, wasn't planning on taking it with me.
