Came home late Friday night to find the big box in front of the truck. Got it set up saturday with the homemade variable speed gleaned from Dan's old "Shoestring Budget" thread. Still have a touch of tweaking, but it works and I found I love variable speed. Slow it down and you can do about anything you want. :)

So, exactly how is your stereo powering that thing??? :D
Glad to see you didn't electrocute yourself with the motor job. Is this something you think a complete novice with no electrical skills whatsoever could do?

Hey, that's me. ;)

Well, if you didn't kill yourself doing it then there's a moderate chance I might not, either! Electricity and gas are two things I stray from...

Looking good, Michael.

I added a couple of things to mine that make it easier on changing belts and tracking. The longer handle give you more leverage and the white knob makes it easier to adjust tracking.

Thanks all -- the longer handle definitely looks like a winner, that spring has some resistance to it. :)

It is heavy indeed, I kinda felt bad for the delivery guy. :D

Can you kinda feel bad for me? I don't have one yet, dad-burn-it. :D

Congrats........... Maybe someday when a rich uncle leaves me his fortune...........Yea....Right

is that a 10 inch wheel?
I second the tracking knob needs to be a little bigger. I need to modify mine for sure!

If I were to get one wheel....should it be 10 or 8 inch?

I had the same question. Reading through all those Grizzly threads, everyone was saying to go 10", but I think that was for the clearance. When you get away from the Grizzly, the general consensus seems to be that 8" is a better all-around wheel...

If i was you, Brian, i would get the 14" wheel. the 8" wheel will let you go about .625" high on your blades. Your knives have wide blades on them and i think you would want to go as big as possible on the wheel so you could go higher on your blades. A 10" wheel will let you go about 3/4" high on you hollow grind. (.150" stock)

Mine is (and is on my grizzly) a 10-inch wheel and it seems to get the job done on a variety of blade sizes. If I want the grind higher, I just "roll it out" a bit.

Edited to add -- I also don't do much steel thinner than 3/16.

Looks like one tool arm and 3 wheels would have me covered :D
Yeah right...The wife will say I need more sales before I get that...he he :p

Michael, you're going to be spoiled with that variable speed now....very nice! :)

Chiro, Dan Kosters tutorial is really good, I think even a novice could build a variable speed unit with his excellent instructions...

I think I may have just committed at least two deadly sins, Lust and Envy. I might have violated the 10th commandment, Thou shalt not covet thy neighbors stuff. However There may be a loophole there, I live in Detroit, can a guy in Missouri be considered my neighbor? Should I consult a lawyer or a priest?
