What is the knife that most strongly represents Spyderco. My knife buying rate has been drastically reduced, but, for the sake of completeness, I feel I should have one Spyderco in my collection. So what knife is most unique to Spyderco. I am leaning heavily toward either an Endura or Civilian. Either one will see some use and carry time.

IMHO the knives most associated with Spyderco would be the Military and the Delica. The Delica is their best selling model and the Military is what I would consider their flagship model.

Agreed. They have more expensive knives, and ones more heavy duty, but when I think Spyderco I think these.

I would think the Police Model is the folder most associated with the Spyderco name. It can be found with the widest assortment of handle materials, blade styles and blade steel. It's always been a class act.

Delica, Endura, Police, Military are the most recognizable

endura will probably be the best bet. if you can afford a military get 2 enduras.

I'd vote for the endura.

My reasoning is that was my first and so far only spyderco knife purchased about 10 years ago. I have recently been checking out spyderco again and got one on the way. Thinking about another too.... :D

I would say any one of these
Military
Delica
Endura

Another vote for the Endura / Delica / Police models.

They have been around the longest, seen the most variations, and are synonymous with the name Spyderco.

Universally I would have to agree with others on the Police, Endura and Delica.

But, peronsally, as to what knife is most unique to Spyderco I'd have to say the Gunting.

When I first read about Spyderco, it was in a novel (Hannibal) a few years ago. The character was using a Harpy. Since then, I can't help seeing a Harpy in my head everytime I think of Spyderco.

Quite strange, since I own 9 Spyderco but no Harpy (yet :)).

My second choice would be the Military. IMHO, the perfect folder.
Of course, the Delica is very popular and a hell of a deal !

Delica, Endura, Military - serrated! Serrations are another big thing associated with Spyderco IMO

Police.

Not sure why, but it could have been the first Spydie I ever saw (the P.I.G. version), in a David E Steele article in Inside Kung Fu on knife vs. stick. I think that the Police carried Spyderco's brand identity for many years, although that may be due to the material that I was looking at (combat oriented).

I've never owned one and probably never will, but its probably one of the earlier production folders designed with weapon use in mind?

Unique to Spyderco? That's difficult, many companies use opening holes, clips, high tech materials, custom designs, serreations and combo edges, premium steels, purpose specific designs, proprietary lock mechanisms, etc. even where Spyderco was there first. (but I believe even the Gunting is an evolution of the REKAT escalator)

Given that Spyderco was thought leader in many of these areas, I would probably say the C15S Terzoula, with Al scales. I believe this may hav been one of the first custom collaborations, incorporates a lot of the features that I've mentioned - and its also my first!

Actually, unique to Spyderco might be the 'little big knife' philosophy, so I think the Dodo is an excellent example of that.

Or is it the Calypso Jr, evidence of the function dictates form attitude?

To me though, what makes Spyderco unique is not any set of features that one model of knife may have, but their innovative, free-thinking approach. Two examples:

1. The MBC programme. Most companies just say: its pointy, sharp and strong, secure --> good for fighting. What other company has taken the approach of: "doesn't matter how good our tool is if you don't know how to use it, so lets train you", and "lets DEFINE the requirements of an MBC knife"? For this reason, then perhaps the Lil' Temperance would effectively represent Spyderco in your collection. Sal's design, folding knife with legally defensible blade length and robust compression lock, rock solid grip, MBC design features and top line materials and even a name that instructs you in its use...

or...

2. The UK Penknife. Long, long, long thread warning:

Spyderco UK Penknife

Who else would do that?!

Sorry for the lack of a straight answer, but Spyderco means so many things to so many people that you really have to figure out what it means to you.

Quick straight answer: Dodo. That's pretty unique at the mo'. Size, blade profile, handle design, unique MBC rated lock, clever wire clip, top materials, function instructs form - economical, lightweight construction, affordable price point (you always get what you pay for with spyderco).

I too would have to vote for the Delica and Endura. They are probably the best selling models that Spyderco has.

I don't own either one, as I think there are better offerings, but they are completely recognizable.
