The knife you carry when you know you're going to be using it...

Well one good knife that I’m not afraid to put into hard use (both because of its strength and price point) is the Byrd Cara Cara G10. Seriously good knife and a bargain at twice the price.

Folders : Endura 4 Wave (not too expensive, but has great steel; VG-10, nice grippy grip, and wave feature) - though I kinda modified the edge into convex edge.

Fixed : SOG X-42 recondo, CRK Mountaineer II, Busse Battle Mistress

I've got a few knives that see some serious use. Spydy Waved Endura, Kershaw JYDII and Blur, Microtech LUDT, BM Griptillian, BM 32 bali. All see relatively tough use, but I think the JYDII is the one I would reach for before any of the others.

I have two "sub-scenarios" of what I believe you are talking about:

#1 I'm going to be using the knife hard/perhaps even "abuse". I know I'm in for a day of cutting carpet/sandpaper/bags of dirt or gravel, etc.

None of these are life or death situations, so I'd rather not carry any of my "nice" knives. In this situation, I grab my Kershaw Cyclone.

#2 Maybe going camping/into the woods. I want a hard use knife, but I want one that is definitely not going to let me down. (Not that I think the Cyclone would, but I feel the situation warrants choosing higher quality and not worrying about scuffing it up.)

Then I go for my Junkyard Dog II CB:

If I know it's going to be rough and dirty, I'll take my Millie or Para. Both, if my wife's going with me. She carries the Para and I tote the Millie.

In these days, this one comes with me to be used.

My homemade, some of you may have seen it in the WSS forum.
For those never seen it, let me introduce.
OAL: 220mm
Blade length: 90mm
Weight: 145gr
Thickness: 3mm
Steel: M2/HRc64, 3 times tempered in salt pot
Handle scale: black canvas micarta

For serious cutting chores my go to knife is my Kershaw Spec Bump and if that doesn't cut it there's my Yuna Mini Hard 3. Everything else is for light duty or for show.

Benchmade large Grip (440c version with combo edge, black handes and black blade, for got the version number)

Spyderco endura 4, pe, frn handle

For a FB: Swamp Rat howling Rat or Kersahw D2 Outcast.

I'm not too worried about hurting these; they all can get the job done and are tough enough for serious cutting.

The closest thing I have to a beater knife is my Endura. I don't trust any of cheapies, and I'd rather not subject my other knives to extremely hard use if I don't have to.

Good twist on a common question! What knife do you really like/trust/prefer when it is cuttin' time?

As much as I try to improve on it, my go-to knife for a few years is my Murray Carter Muteki Neck Knife - at just over 7", it's big enough to really cut something, but compact enough to carry everywhere. It's got a nice thin edge geometry and a Hitachi carbon steel core, which lends to excellent cutting performance that I just haven't been able to best.

Recently, in a attempt to improve upon what I have learned from my favorite knife, I bought an upgraded forged version - slightly beefier, nicer ironwood, etc. However, it still doesn't feel so familiar and nimble in my hand as the Muteki (essentially a mid-tech).

ETA: If I really need a beater for heavy use, I'll just use a hatchet or my $2.99 Harbor Freight machete. FOr beater folder use, I just use a SuperKnife. However, I'm not afraid to really use the Carter either -- I have sharpened out two damaged tips and sanded down a scuffed handle, but otherwise it is deceptively tough.

I use whatever knife is in my pocket. I love to use my custom knives, as I get the most pleasure out of USING them. I currently have my GTC Downsized Prisma in my pocket.

If I know I'm going to use it...Most of the time I grab my Sean O'Hare River knife, or my very OLD Spyderco Indura.

I don't carry either as an EDC, but seem to grab them when I know I'm going to use a knife alot that day. Them being well used and all scratched up is the main reason I grab those two.
