The Kuk Fairy Came!!

Dude, I like the patina on your blade and think it looks more attractive than the forge scale. What did you use for a finish on the handle?

Thanks! I am very happy the way the blade came out - especially for the very little effort I put in. lol. I didn't really care for the black scaling on it. It made the blade too rough for me - it will slice and chop much cleaner this way. :)

The Handle - I used, basically, whatever I had lying around. :o
I started with a mixture of BLO, Marine Varnish and Naptha and finished it off with just Marine Varnish cut with Naptha because I didn't want to spend days on it waiting for it to dry. I did 4 coats all together.

What did you do for the patina, I agree it looks great. Did you use the vinegar/lemon forced patina that seems to be of the standards on many threads about forcing them?

Thank you Shavru!

i used straight White Vinegar. It was the only descaling and patina inducing agent I had on hand. ;)

I soaked a rag and wrapped the blade with it - waited an hour and a half and cleaned all the scale residue off and repeated for about another hour.

Yep, That sure did a very nice job on it. I like the forge scale on the one I have right now, but should it ever show any touch of rust underneath, as some times happens, I will not be sad a bit if mine comes out like yours did.

Yeah - the forge scale looked cool but mine definitely had rust and pitting starting on the blade so I figured I would just go for it. I wanted to keep the "villager" kind of look instead of grinding and polishing so the forced patina works well.

My quick "refinishing" project was mostly just to protect and preserve the Khukri but I am very pleased with how it came out.

I like it so much that I am tempted to buy one of the DBVUKs for sale but I am just trying to resist the urge.:)

The handle on mine has it's 7th coat of oil and will continue this for a week yet. Started off using the oil and 500 grit sand paper after the second coat to fill the pores in the wood. Deep penetration is desirable :D (Ooooh. I don't believe I actually said that in public!) as well as a finish that seems to make the wood so translucent that you could seem to fall into it like water. Takes a lot of rubbing. Am using the same stuff I've used in the rifle business for the past 40 years. The blade appearance will be modified, but just how is not figured out yet. Am leaning to a straight brown.

It sounds like you are a true craftsman! I am sure it is going to look amazing when you are done! I am really looking forward to seeing it. Don't forget to post some pictures when you are done.

"Deep penetration is desirable" - :D Ha ha!
