The Least Original Thread Ever: General Use Fixed Blade

Oh man, I just looked it up and I'm looking it a lot. Is the swamp rat website the best place to get it, or are there cheaper options?

Either Swamp Rat (if they're still available) or on the exchange or that auction place. Really great knife!

RMD is a great knife.
From your description, though, all I could think of is my BK-16.
I wouldn't try to talk you out of an ESEE - though I don't have any myself. I like the handles on the RMD and Beckers a lot more, but I have X-Large hands so you may feel differently. The Swamp Rat and Becker knives do have more sculpted, shapely scales, which I find much more ergonomic. If you can, try the Ka-Bar Becker and ESEE knives that meet your other criteria, and see which one feels better. All 3 are tough as nails, with great warranties.

I would say the Becker bk7 or ESEE 6 would suit your needs good.
Or if you look at the bk17, thinner handles, and I have just fallen madly in love with mine.
Use it at work every day and in the woods as my go to knife every time...
Good luck on your hunt for new steel, but keep in mind, both Becker and ESEE are highly addictive, lol...

The addiction thing is serious. I got a new Spyderco for Christmas after losing one, and it's been a constant battle not to buy like 10 more. I just got my first Benchmade today and (although I don't seem to be quite as attracted to their designs) I already want more. I'm all about using them though, so I figure why go over board?

If you can afford a Ratmandu, I recommend them without reservation.

For an inexpensive truck/trail/camp knife, look at the Ontario RTAK II.

But only if you have access to a decent belt sander. It took me about ten minutes to turn that slab of a handle into something I wanted to hold.

It's not what I'd normally carry. I assume gear in my car will be stolen. So I go for good but cheap. I'd hate to risk my Ratmandu that way.

Everything in your original post screams Becker BK-7 with the exception of not liking wide handles. I have an ESEE-4 which I love as well.

For a more traditional looking bushcraft knife, look at the Bark River range, from the Fox River, through the Bravo 1 and 1.5, Aurora (my personal favourite and I think would suit you to a tee) and up to the Fox River Magnum.
