The legendary Zippo Lighter

i might get one of those to fuel my peanut ... but its oringed and it keeps fuel for ages ... going on a year now on the first one i got and pulled it out at xmas , and it was still full...

What I like about the Zippo is the handsfree continuance flame which has come in handy for me more than once in the field. I have carried my solid brass Zippo now for over 20+ years !!!

Gotta love the good old zippo!

This high polish chrome armor has been my EDC for a while:

It could even double as a signaling mirror

I have the cheap Chinese version of the peanut:

I bought several and EDC one. I have 2 or 3 that I filled with Zippo fuel and then put aside - they still work fine after 4 months or so - clearly the O-ring sealed design really does work for an emergency lighter. I don't smoke so I don't need to use the lighter daily - but I like to keep some means of lighting a fire on hand. For camping a lighter that is O-ring sealed and small and light is a great thing to have.

I love Zippo's. I carry a nice looking one for a night out on the town but when in the woods, it's 2 Bics and a fire starter.

I've been EDCing a Zippo since before I became a smoker. Even now with regular use through the day I only fill it maybe twice a month. I'm sure a ranger band would probably make it last even longer. I also suppose that in a survival situation I'd get a fire going and probably keep it going until I was rescued or decided to move on. It's not like I'd be using it 15 or so times a day like I do now.

Plus the fact that a Zippo is windproof, hands free once lit, and works in the cold puts it leaps and bounds ahead of a Bic for me.

I've got 5 or 6 zippos floating around. Using this guy these days.

My solid brass Zippo that has givin me over 20 years of EDC service. She has some miles on her but is just as pretty today as the day I bought her.

I love Zippo's. I have a Millennium series one. Great lighter but when headed to go camp I always have one of these. Lights and burns no matter what way you turn it. Smokers be aware though if you have a few drinks and your accuracy is off you burn you smoke in two! (I quite smoking a year and a half ago)

Dude, I've burned cigs in half, lengthwise, trying to light them while...ahem...pleasantly relaxed. Also, lighting the filter end is not advisable.

In my opinion, Zippos are for carrying to the clubs, in a Zippo belt pouch, not in your pocket, and for flashing out when a smokin' hot (pun intended) girl asks for a light (out in the smoking patio). Other than that, they leak and can chemically burn your leg, and they dry up just looking at them. Very cool for social occasions, but nothing to depend on in the field.

In my experience, a full zippo will dry up in about 3 weeks with little to no use. I always make sure to leave it standing upright when it's not in my pocket, I'm not sure if it helps or not though. I usually fill it up once a week at least, so it always has plenty of fuel.

I agree that it's not the best SHTF/TEOTWAWKI lighter, but it's better than any of those high-tech butane torches IMO. Zippos can work with several flammable liquids, even gasoline I think?

I'd hesitate to put gasoline in a zippo, the flash point is too low, and the evaporation point far to low as well, I would however use diesel, kerosene, liquid paraffin, jet B, or the such like... wonder if sunflower oil would work.....

I haven't carried a zippo since my Marine Corps days, but back then (15 years ago) all the devildogs carried one.
