Granted I am in Tejas but it is my opinion that EVERYONE should eat more salsa. 3 to 4 servings a day would be about right. I consider it major food group.
Problem is..only "GOOD" salsa is in Texas or Mexico, or some remote parts along the S.W. border. There may be a few who "know salsa" and have some good home-made. Nothing like Texas BBQ either. Guess its because its too HOT to cook indoors.
First thing I learned about when I lived in Texas was to eat peppers. I thought Jalapenos were hot....sheeeee-it. But..you DO have to start with them...before long yer eating them on your eggs in the morning. Hell..you could go to a Luby's in Texas and get good salsa. The "GOOD" salsa stops at the border for some weird reason.
Peppers are rated in Scoville Units (SU)
sweet bell...............0 (SU)
El Paso...................700
Coronado................1000
Jalapeno.................2,500-8,000
Hidalgo...................6,000-17,000
typical Habanero......200,000
Red savina Habanero.577,000
these are just some examples, and the is one more I was offered by a Mexican friend...a tiny red pepper called Tepin... off the Scoville chart....about 1/4" in diameter. He offered it with a tell-tale smile......THE GRINGO KILLER.
I lived in Texas for 6 great years. You know you are a Texan when you no longer get tears in your eyes when you eat a Hidalgo or better...and you are no longer stupid enough to wipe your eyes with your fingers...if you do tear up. Worse than fire ants or mace.
You are also a Texan when you know the plural of y"all...... is NOT y'all's......but all y'all.
