The Les George Knives Thread

Well I think this VECP is going to be going back to Les after all. While it does feel better with the new washers, I still don't think the action is going to get where it needs to go just from callousing up my thumb trying to get it there. I see videos of all these drop-shutty VECPs and this one just isn't that. Whether it's lockbar tuning or what, I'm going to let Les work it out instead of trying to fix it myself. Mostly disappointed in the seller I bought it from not disclosing that the amazing action was coming from a loose pivot, but I'd rather try and get it fixed than talk to him about a return at this point since I've disassembled the knife multiple times and swapped washers. It was a safe queen for him so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and tell myself he didn't notice the blade being so wobbly. If I had bought this knife as my first Les George, I probably would have sold it and never owned another.

Mostly just venting. I'm confident Les will get the knife running how it needs to, this is just the first time in a long time I've been disappointed like this with a knife purchase. Once Les gives it the seal of approval it will likely be up for sale. Whether reasonable or not, this experience has cemented in my mind that I prefer the Talos lol.

I’ve handled/owned somewhere between 15-20 vecps over the past few years. Drop shutty is the exception not the rule. The large majority of what I’ve owned were not drop shutty like the mk3. I actually can name the ones that were, my v1 vecp (probably the smoothest), two tantos I’ve had and my 12 day intrepid which is on a g10 scale. The rest have been super smooth but would take a considerable wrist flick to close em. So I wouldn’t expect any vecps to be drop shutty. The mk3 and the few v2 Talos I’ve handled on the other hand have all been drop shutty. I’ve come to believe it’s the lockbar tension that largely determines how drop shutty a knife is. If drop shutty is important to you it’s very simple to just slightly decrease the tension on the lockbar.

I adjusted the lockbar tension on my Talos after your suggestion a few weeks back, and it made a huge difference. It's exactly where I want it now - perfect.

I did the same on my Squatch ESV that had bit light detent, it also resulted in great results!
it’s nice being able to fine tune just about any knife to just the way ya like. Frame locks at least. 😉

If that's the case maybe I'll just save Les the trouble and sell it as is then...I've just always heard nothing but rave reviews for Les George washer actions and this one would best be described as "meh". Had this been my first George knife I probably wouldn't have kept it or owned any others after it. If that's normal for the VECP then maybe I just expected too much after my Talos. Whatever the case I'm a bit bitter about this particular knife being that the seller misrepresented it and a very active member in the LG communities who owned it before him vouched about how great the action was on the sale post. I'd rather pass it along to someone else than spend more time on it.

Wow buddy, you really get around!

I’m really sorry to hear that man. I wouldn’t give up on the vecp just yet. And I haven’t handled any of the new ones with mc. Maybe someone who has can chime in on what the action is like on them. I would expect them to be really good considering they are new.

I’m curious how bad it is, could you post a video?

The knife is at home in its pouch until I post it for sale this weekend. I'll try to remember to make a video tonight if I have time, if not I'll share the one from the sale post when I make it. It is probably not as bad as I'm making it sound, but its action nowhere near as good as the Talos which in turn is not as good as the MK3. Being a newer knife with Magnacut, I expected it to at least be in the same realm as the Talos and it just isn't. Maybe it isn't intended to be.

I've probably exaggerated how bad it is because I'm disappointed in the whole deal and I feel a little bit like I got burned. At the end of the day it is my fault for impulse buying a knife based on the action without asking about other details such as blade play. When the pivot is tight enough to eliminate blade play, it just doesn't feel like anything I'd think super highly of or want more of in my collection. I'd choose my Sebenzas over it 11 times out of 10 while the Talos has nearly kicked them out of my pocket for the time being. Maybe it would eventually break in and get there but I'm not willing to give it the pocket time to find out when I have a Talos that was great out of the box and only getting better. The VECP doesn't feel good enough for me to keep being disappointed in it and hoping it will improve over time.

Does anyone own one of Boker+ collection 2024? How is it? Really tempted to pull the trigger on one, the CF looks so damn nice, and i usually think CF looks tacky and cheap.

I've never owned one, but a knife buddy of mine bought one and wasn't impressed with it. He is a knife maker and has owned a custom FM-1 along with many other Les George knives. Here was his review:

scale fitment was poor, blade grind looked cheap, the heel of the edge was overground
just wasn't worth the money
maybe for $200
but not $425

Take that with a grain of salt because it's possible he got a lemon, but his review prevented me from getting one. If you pull the trigger on it, I'd love to know what you think!

Don’t know anything about that knife but $425? You can buy a real LG like new for that on the secondary. There’s actually an OG Talos available on fb for that price right now.

Remembered I promised you guys a video of the now sold VECP. This was the action with the pivot set to allow a shake shut with some blade play as a penalty:

On another note, is it normal for the thumb disk to be slightly offset towards the show side on the MK3? Totally happy with it and it works fine for both hands, just curious.

It looks like that one might have been milled slightly off center. Looks like a great opportunity to pick up a monster disc!
