Sunday I took the little one out for a picnic and a hike, and to surprise her with a new knife. For the last couple of years I have watched as various handle configurations have appeared, looking for a Hiking Buddy with a pinkish purpleish sort of color, but hoping for something not too brightly colored and in a synthetic. Recently a HB showed up in the flea market that looked ideal, and from the look on her face when I handed it to her I was right. She spent most of the day with a smile on her face, particularly when she was using it, or showing it to friends.

I'm not sure what I am going to do about a sheath yet, but I'll get her something besides this old JRE. Watcher her wearing it, it will need to be something like a deep pouch with good retention the way she likes to run and jump.

When we got to Rally Ridge, the first thing she did was run and find a stick to whittle down for eating her smoked oysters.

Then she wanted to do all the cutting and I let her get acquainted with her new friend. I really need to find a source for one of those thin, roll up, camp cutting boards...

Then we went for a hike, wandering around the area, looking at turkey tracks, playing in puddles, finding pieces of chert

Thanks! Yeah, she has two other knives she has had for a while now. On one the handle is too near round for her to have good control of the blade, and the other is a small TOPS scandi I her because I knew she couldn't hurt it...but she really isn't used to that grind having mostly used kitchen knives. She has used my Fiidlebacks, and her mother's Bushboot, so she was super excited to get her own. It was really cool watching her face light up!

Thanks guys. It was totally worth it just to see the look on her face when i handed it to her, and when she would just stop and stare at it when she was using it

How Awesome!

Hey Brian,

That is a very nice gift to give your daughter. She looks exceptionally happy. I am glad to see her enjoy a shared passion with you. Very cool. Something tells me we will be seeing more epic photos of your future adventures together.

Looks like a great day Mist! I have a feeling she will remember that one for a long time. The knife looks great and I was actually admiring the sheath too!

With the boots, camo cargoes, and utility belt, she's a true chip off the old block.

I don't think there's anything finer than a day spent cruising the woods with your daughter(s).

Very cool thread! Your daughter is growing up so fast. It's good to see she still enjoys smoked oysters.

There's a ton of great leather benders you could go with, but that sheath she has isn't too bad. I've found that dying those sharpshooter sheaths a dark brown color makes the eyelets stand out and gives the sheath a much cleaner look.

Nice Tick pic! It made me cringe.

Very nice! Good choice on that knife for her. Looks like a good knife for a girl without being too girly.

Thank you for sharing Mistwalker. She looks very satisfied with her new blade. Ive got the same combo in a bushie and its a sweet one. I look forward to giving my kids their first proper knives as well. Knowing my 5 yr old hes gonna wish for something "piratey".
