The Little One's First Fiddleback

Awesome. Start em early!

Exactly, the sooner the better :)

How Awesome!

Behold, children are a gift of the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward.

Thank you :)

Hey Brian,

That is a very nice gift to give your daughter. She looks exceptionally happy. I am glad to see her enjoy a shared passion with you. Very cool. Something tells me we will be seeing more epic photos of your future adventures together.

Phil

She is pretty familiar with the Hiking Buddy model. She used her mom's a few times to help me with food prep, and she has used another I had. I had been looking around for one for her for years and just never saw the handle config I for sure wanted for her. When I saw that one, I knew it was the one I wanted to get her.

Looks like a great day Mist! I have a feeling she will remember that one for a long time. The knife looks great and I was actually admiring the sheath too!

Thanks man, it's not a bad sheath, I just use it for other knives and she might as well have her own sheath :)

With the boots, camo cargoes, and utility belt, she's a true chip off the old block.

I don't think there's anything finer than a day spent cruising the woods with your daughter(s).

Lol, and interactive and hands-on with the earth as that girl is camo works well for our outings :)

Awesome!!!

Thanks man!!

Very cool thread! Your daughter is growing up so fast. It's good to see she still enjoys smoked oysters.

There's a ton of great leather benders you could go with, but that sheath she has isn't too bad. I've found that dying those sharpshooter sheaths a dark brown color makes the eyelets stand out and gives the sheath a much cleaner look.

Nice Tick pic! It made me cringe.

She is growing fast, hard to believe she will be 10 in a few months. Oh she loves smoked oysters and clams. I have sardines for our next day out...see how she likes those. She loves fish.

Oh, I know there is nothing wrong with the sheath, it's just the one I have kept around the last four years to put small Fiddlebacks in when I get them. It's been through a few Bushboots and even more Hiking Buddies. Her mother and I both have nice sheaths, and I'd like to find her one that suited her own personality.

Yeah, I didn't miss those at all last summer!

Very nice! Good choice on that knife for her. Looks like a good knife for a girl without being too girly.

Thank you, and that's exactly what I was thinking

Thank you for sharing Mistwalker. She looks very satisfied with her new blade. Ive got the same combo in a bushie and its a sweet one. I look forward to giving my kids their first proper knives as well. Knowing my 5 yr old hes gonna wish for something "piratey".
Knut

Yeah, she was quite happy with the surprise. I saw a Bushie similar but darker...drunken burlap perhaps, that I would have loved to have gotten.

Pictures and story behind are great. Thanks for posting ;-)

Thanks man, I'm glad you liked the post

That had to mean a lot to her, to get a knife similar to Mom and Dad. I bet she will never forget that moment in her life.

Great gift for your daughter.

Try Ikea, they have a bendable 2 pack of cutting boards for $1.99, they should work well for showing in hiking gear.

Looks like you are both having a great time. My daughter is the same age, but is swapping between a Spyderco Delica, a blue Mora:o and a damascus knife I made for her.. It is something special when they get their own kit and start using it and taking care of it (we are struggling a bit with the latter part...)

Yes, TOO fast lol

Hey Brian, how are you bud? Too fast indeed. My daughter is already headed to high school next year! Unfortunately, that means studying, soccer, friends and boys:mad: will equate to less time with dad. Oh well, such is life. She doesn't care for camping anymore, but I can sometimes persuade her to take a hike. (That's literally)
Take care man!

I think so, and I hope so, though growing up with me in my line of work these days, she has seen and used a lot of knives and because of my fondness for them, several Fiddlebacks. I'm afraid that she doesn't yet have the capacity to fully grasp the import of it. Though I do thing that being exposed to the reactions of my friends who do grasp it will help her to do so over time. Right now all she really gets is that her daddy gave her a special knife that is really pretty, and that works well for her. For now that's good enough for me. I thought about putting it in the safe for a while and waiting till she could fully understand it, but I decided that even if she doesn't fully understand it, I do. I would rather spend that time watching her use and enjoy a knife she loves, rather that spend that time waiting. Life is just too short and tomorrow is never guaranteed...

Thank you, I couldn't remember where an acquaintance had gotten his until I read your post. I look online as soon as I get done posting this.

Very cool knife ...MistWalker
Really you are a at the best place to hang around with this knife:thumbup:

Thank you. Hanging out in the woods with my daughters has always been the best places for me, regardless of which woods :)

Thanks man, we usually have a great time out :) Very cool that she has one that you actually made for her. Yeah...we are still working on the maintenance part...

Hi Sergio, great at the moment, just swamped with work and home improvement projects! My oldest daughter is already out on her own and gave me my first grandson back in July. It's hard these days just to arrange a coffee date..so yeah, already been down that road once...really not looking forward to the repeat. You too brother, hope to see you at Blade!

Very cool Mist, pretty awesome getting a Fiddie for your first knife. My first was an SAK, as I was a MacGyver fan growing up :D

Awesome! Man I wish my first knife was a fiddleback

Thanks guys, but it's not her first knife, it's her first Fiddleback. She now has three fixed and one folder that is a very old GSA knife I bought for her recently. Her first knife is another hand made knife, given to her by a close friend of mine who has been making knives for over thirty years He gave it to me for her almost five years ago because he wanted to be the one to make her first knife. It fit her hand pretty good back then, but it is a little small now and harder for her to control. I wanted her to have a well made knife that I knew would give her good control of the blade. Of all the knives I have let her try she has like the HB model best and has done the best with it, so a Hiking Buddy it was.

Hey there. Dig the knife. Looks like she's having a blast.

On the cutting board, try foldable dinnerware. I have three or four sets of the Orikaso brand, but they seem to be no longer around. Fozzils still is though. I love it. I typically just carry the bowl when backpacking as anything that can go on a plate can also go in a bowl but not the other way around sometimes. For a cutting board, serving platter, etc., just unfold it flat. Also makes cleaning a breeze. I always lick mine clean and give it a good wipe on my pants. Ready for the next meal. Lol. :)

Yeah, we always have fun. She has been hitting the woods with me since she was old enough to walk.

Lol, and thanks for that info, I like the fozzils!

:) Looks like a Great Day! I have a daughter that's turning seven. I hope to do something like that one day, we have to enjoy them while we can. Thanks for sharing.

Yes we do. they're grown and gone before you know it!

Great stuff Brian. There is something about spending time outdoors with your kids (and knives) that just can't be beat. Glad she like her present and thanks for letting us share in her enjoyment...

You are definitely nailing it if one truly does only live once, Mist! Thank you for sharing these priceless moments with us.

Thanks Bill! Yeah, I love hanging out in the woods with her. We are headed into the warmer season now, and usually I haven't taken her out as much in the hot months due to snakes and spiders and her desire to pet every animal in the woods. So most of my hikes this summer with her be a lot of talking and showing.

Thanks man, I'm getting older and this is my last go round with this, I'm milking it for all I can :)

What a heartwarming story. Thank you for sharing this.

Thanks man, I'm glad you enjoyed the post.
