Alright, this is not about the locking mechanism. This is about the piece of metal on top of the handle of my Endura 4 that is the lock. Is it the same steel as the blade or is my VG-10 going to eat a hole in this stuff if I wave open it to hard too many times. I know it probably won't happen, I'm just persistently curious.

I believe I've heard around the traps that the same steel is used for the lockbars as the blade.
Sorry I can't be of more use or detail.

According to some guy (name of Sal Glesser) they use dissimilar steels to prevent galling. The lockbar will wear out around 500,000 openings.

Okay, I made the last part up ;) I have a Police model from the early days, before the handles were chamfered, and the lockbar and blade still lock together perfectly. I bought it used, but from the looks of it, it wasn't babied.

You got my hopes up with that 500,000 business

That is a good answer. The real truth about steel types, heat treats etc. is all proprietary information and isn't released. That's where trust in a company comes in.

I have a Endura original model FRN clip. "G2" (actually gin 1 steel) that I've had since 92 and it's been through countless thousands of openings and closings and the thing has gotten smoother and smoother over the years. I still EDC it in a rotation of types. Joe

I have a 20 YO CS lockback that still gets opened and used some. Lockup is rock solid, just like the day I bought it new.

I should add that I expect no less of my Spydercos (had to get the name in there since this is a Spyderco subforum), I just don't have any Spydies that old... yet. :D
