It's interesting that you mentioned John Wayne's role in

cigarette smoking. Rather, it was probably due to
radioactive fallout that he was exposed to while filming
"The Conqueror" in Utah. That film was not only possibly
the worst miscasting in history, but also the most fatal to a
film crew in history

i personally thought it was his greatest comedy role., his accent was hilarious in that context. miscasting was too kind a word. he took a bad movie and made it worse. but he was the 'duke'
