The long term SAK.

I don’t buy into the dumbed down, silly idea that slip joints are unsafe because they don’t lock open. Not to mention I’m getting older, and any fantasies I once had about surviving off the land with my pocket knife went bye bye with my knees and back…also grandkids have a way of settling you down.

Yeah, the years and living real life tends to do that.

edit to add; Just wait until til you start getting the after market parts installed. After the knee replacement, shoulder hardware, the pins in the old broken bones. I told the wife that when I get cremated, make sure they rake through the ashes, there'll be enough stainless steel parts that, ,depending on scrap metal prices, she'll be able to get a free meal off of them. ;)

Here’s my long term SAK : a trusty old Victorinox Spartan. Even when I’m carrying something else for the day, this is usually dropped into my pockets too 😊

My first SAK was a Champ I acquired while stationed in Germany as well. I did find it too big and bulky for my pocket, and I lost it probably in one of several moves there later living as a civilian.

This is my longest running SAK that I have used a lot - Hunter or Huntsman. Semi-retired now as I do not like the slide button release for the blade. But it is still a very useable blade and tools - sits around waiting to be abused. My favorite now is the Trekker, has all the tools I want including a better bottle opener, and I like that major tools are liner lock. A close second is the Alox Soldier - this would actually serve me fine in most urban settings. SAKs to me represent great value for money and better than the typical multi tool. I have a Swiss Tool but have hardly ever carried it or used it. Too big and heavy.

I owned some kind of SAK through most of my life. They were all well made practical tools, but I never had one with the perfect combination of tools in a compact size that gave me that feeling of a special bond with it.

About four years ago, I saw an ad in the Exchange for a custom mod Cadet-X by Spikediesel Spikediesel . I quickly jumped on it. I knew immediately upon arrival that it would become my most carried and used pocket knife. That is exactly what happened. I regularly use all five tools. The scissors take the Cadet to the next level. It is the perfect combination of compact size and features for my needs.

Despite showing some honest pocket wear and a few dings from accidentally dropping it a couple times or going through the washing machine, it remains solid as a rock. I love this knife.

The other long term SAK I have is the Rambler on my keyring. I previously had a Classic in this role. I didn’t like the fact that the blade opened toward the keyring. This always seemed awkward to me.

When I first discovered that the blade and scissors on the Rambler opened away from the keyring, it was an easy decision to make the switch. The Rambler is here to stay.

Whelp ... i dun diddit ... 🤨
Bought a used standard plain red Huntsman, even tho I wasn't intending to buy a knife this year.
For what appears lightly to unused for under $17.30 shipped ... I "couldn't" say "no." ... especially since the funds were available.

When it gets to me, I can carry it instead of the fancy/"collectable"(?) 'Year Of The Ox' Huntsman I've been carrying.
I can semi retire the fancy one, delegating it to special day carry.

Tho I might get a pair of red "Plus" scales with both pin and pen slots ... and the red toothpick, tweezer, and SAK fob for the new to me Huntsman.

A Fire Ant kindling and a ferro rod (or a flint & steel kit) probably won't be needed, since there is a very exceptionally high probability my camping, hunting, and fishing days are over. 😭
(I also have a Zippo type lighter, and can of Zippo fuel in my backpack, so getting a ferro rod would be kinda silly. 😁🙄)

I have a Vic Pioneer from sometime in the early 80s that still gets pocket time. I usually grab theTinker though just because I’ve become afraid of losing the Pioneer which served me for so long.
