Over the holidays I visited my in-laws in Mississippi. They own about a 100 acres and I am the only one that LOVES the woods. I romped around all day and thanks to global warming I got to do it without a jacket. :)

It was hovering around 68-70 degrees and I made some fires and walked in the woods following animal tracks.

I carried a machete at times, a really cheap Garza, never heard of it with a broken handle. I had my CS master hunter but it mostly got in the way. All I mostly carried was my leatherman supertool and a SAK trailmaster. The LM cost about $40, 13 years ago and the SAK was about $20.

I am really coming to the conclusion that there is no need for small fixed blades at all. I might just carry a LM and a SAK. I still think it is important to have some type of large knife over 7" like a machete or what have you.

For awhile I got into or followed the trend of small bushcraft knives but I think I am going back to the large knife with SAK combo.

Laughs - funny I did the exact opposite over the last year. Got rid of all the ittle folders and replaced them with little fixed blades :D At lease we can agree that we both enjoy romping in the woods :) :)

I could sure get by with the 12 inch Tram and a good folder. However it would seem strange not to have a FB.:D

BTW what is the difference between the Treker and the Trail Master?

I couldnt disagree more, but to each his own. Curious, What part of Missisippi were you in. I spend quite a bit of time there.

I like small fixed blades.. Usually I go large knife 7inches plus, a small fixed blade 2 &1/2 inches and a sak or LM....but I could get by with just a large blade and a sak, or LM

I am not one of those guys who gets pissed when someone doesn't agree with my knife choice. Plus I will probably change my mind next week anyway.

The trekker is a one handed opening and the trailmaster is not.

For a smaller knife I like something like the mora #1 classic, all-round better than a SAK/folder IMO. But I would agree that a small FB isn't "needed", but it does offer an appreciable advantage for me.

I think I'm leaning the same way you do but I'm prefering multitool, medium fixed blade, and hatchet. Although there are a lot of times in the summer when just a multitool and my ritter grip can do just about anything I need.

I have a couple One Hand Trekers The first had the serreated blade then I later found the one with the plain blade. They are enough knife IMO to do the small knife part and stand with one large blade. I have a SOG Jungle Fusion and the Treker fits in the outside sheath provided on the SOG's Sheath. They make a good combo.

I don't think there is a need for a Nessmuck. I like a nice fixed, and a small folder (mostly for the accuracy blade and the saw).

For a day hike, I prefer my F1 and a SAK Hiker. For camping, the same combo but with a leatherman wave, a GB Mini Hatchet and a Laplander saw. This is the perfect combo for me, but we can all agree to disagree.

but I think I am going back to the large knife with SAK combo.

Thats what I've done. BK7,RC6, ka-bars or what ever. Though I favor the RC6 and a VIC Rucksack. If I were canoe or car camping I will bring the wetterlings.

Fonly this is definitely what I am going to start carrying. I have an F-1 it is awesome but what can that do that a SAK can't?

Than a Machete or whatever large knife you prefer.

Even though my go to knife for most things is a Trekker, for woods walking, I lean to Nessmuks view on edged tools in the wilderness. I think that having a fixed blade knife along with you, even if you don't use it, is the best way to go. When you need something for the heavier wood working chores, an axe/hatchet is probably the best bet for woods specific applications.
