The lowly P38

i have FOND memories of the p-38. i have one in my wallet right now that bailed me and my cousin out on a camping trip when we were kids, and i have never been without one. Until recently, i kept it on my keys, but i moved it to the wallet.

i would be really pissed if TSA took my p-38, its a very treasured peice of my childhood, and has been everywhere with me , in the Marines, the whole bit. best ferro rod striker there is.

Long Live the P-38!

I've had my US SPEAKER made P-38 since it was issue to me in the army. It's been with me ever since, and it's been used as a screwdriver, light pry tool, as well as a can opener. I'm a little mystified as to how one was taken from a vet by TSA. I've flown with mine several times since 9-11, and there's been no problem at all. It, and my Sears 4-way key chain screwdriver goes in the zipped compartment of my wallet, which goes through the x-ray machine.

I'd never go anywhere without my P-38.

Because you have not encountered the right useless government functionary. WW2 Fighter Pilot Joe Foss was awarded The Congressional Medal of Honor. A TSA moron hassled him over it at some airport in Arizona. I don't recall if it was confiscated and later returned or what but it actually happened.

Just because you have not been bitten by the bureaucracy doesn't mean it won't happen at some time in the future. :)

Is it one of the newer Shelby ones? If so, try squaring the end or outside edge of the "blade." The handle on those seems very soft, even when you get them square, the sharp edge will roll, rather than scrape the firesteel. I use a bench grinder very gingerly. I can post a pic of what I'm talking about, if you need me too.

Thanks Fishooter - will give that a try! Your explanation makes sense, so don;t think photo will be necessary.

I was fortunate enough to pick up a handful, so might try one on the keychain next time i have to fly. If it gets confiscated, I will be unhappy but more at the idea that it's NOT ALLOWED than the fact that I lost it. If it was an old one that i had for many years, I don't think i would take the chance.
