Ok gang,
I know I've been not very forthcoming with info regarding the new machete from BK&T. We have been having difficulties in a couple of areas on this project, each one seemed to be such that we would be able to ship 'any day now'. Well, its taking longer than we thought.

First we had some problems with the product, mainly the sheath, which we overcame. Then, as we were just about ready to start shipping after a couple of delays, we get a letter from the BUSH HOG corp. You know, the people that make the mowers that you pull behind tractors. Well, our trademark search hadn't turned anything up regarding knives, but they contend that a machete is a 'Farm implement', and since we called the new product a machete.......well as you can imagine...the lawyers got involved.

We really didn't think that they had a leg to stand on, but they have alot more to lose than we did. We had ALOT of blades ready to go at that point, already tang stamped BUSH HOG. But , in the end, we really didn't want to be the 'bad guy' in the whole thing. A trademark is a trademark, and we wouldn't want anyone doing us wrong either. So we have had to start over on the whole production run. The production department has given me an expected ship date of 4/15/01.

BTW, the new name is the BK&T PATROL MACHETE, which was one of Ethan's earlier ideas. I like it alot. Kinda goes with the BECKER PATROL PACK he designed for Eagle Industries.

In case you guys have heard, we did release about 25 machetes that were just marked BK&T, Camillus NY to Brigade Quartermasters a couple of weeks ago. These were a few blades that were not marked earlier. Brigade had the machete in their catalog since Jan. and had some VERY angery customers. They had the first order in to us, so we finished those proto blades and shipped them out.

We at CAMILLUS and BK&T are sorry for the frustration you guys have endured. We are trying to make the best possible product for our customers, and trying to get the most information out as early as we can. But early info can be a doulble edged sword. Believe me, the members of BladeForums are the best informed cutlery customers in the world. You guys know about stuff at CAMILLUS before alot of people at the plant do sometimes.

But when things don't go as planned, it can bite us in the butt. We try to balance the early info we let out, but murphy is alive and well in the cutlery business.

When we get closer, I'll get another update out. Thanks for your understanding.

Thanks for the update Will. Is there any chance those blades already stamped might possibly be sold as "seconds" to BFC members? Or that they might fall off a truck on their way to be destroyed?

Sorry Burke,
I already tried that one

It didn't work

Will, I appreciate your honesty but in all honesty, I've gotten so used to waiting for knives nowadays, that it doesn't bother me that much anymore. Compost happens and good knives take time. Waiting just wets the appetite. I knew if they weren't shipping, you had a damn good reason. Now when in the hell are you shipping those Talon 154CMs?

I get some pleasure from finding a relentlessly peaceful use for a combative looking knife.

Will,
I for one think you guys took the high road and did the honorable thing.

Camillus not only stands for quality but honor, too.

Will;

You said that the sheath was causing some of the hold up, but that it's fixed now. Any chance of telling us what the problem was, and maybe getting a pic of the new sheath? Any info greatly appreciated. Is the sheath still reinforced nylon, and right-handed only? We lefties have been persecuted long enough, I say. :~} Manos sinestro, unite!

What will become of the first run? Are they to be destroyed? How many were made? Maybe the Bushhog corporation could buy and sell them since they are Farm Implements. I know that I would buy one.

So, the problem is the stamp on the tang ... the old-time cattle rustlers knew how to solve a problem like that ... you can't erase a brand but you can add to it ... let's see, what could we change Bush Hog into ...

George W
Bush Hogg's
Chad Remover

or

Bushy Hog
The Pig With Class
(cute picture of a pig wearing a tuxedo)

Hmm ... it'd help if you can post a pic so we can see how much space is available on each side of the trademark ... and what the font looks like; we might be able to change a U into an O or something like that ... maybe we can have a contest....
