The Malla khuk

EXTREMELY apt description, Howard. That statement quite succinctly describes an HI Malla.

BTW, that handle on your Malla appears much like mother of pearl in the photo. You do that with mirrors and lens filters?

Interesting that the Malla is being described as light. Mine is not. I got the first one out of HI.

Picture and specs from the FAQ.

It is not light although sometimes it seems so. I would characterize it as balanced and authoritative. It would be a very decent chopper although it has never seen such duty.

I wonder if the specs have evolved some since they made the first one from the ancient rusty model? Perhaps some of you with newer ones can offer comparisons.

That's one of the things that makes HI knives so hard (oops I mean so easy) to talk about. No two are alike, even within the same "model" designation. Opinions may, of course, vary widely, as who knows if the knife one writes about has exactly the same nature as the one another writes of.

I guess the trick is to find one (individual knife) that sings to you.

Maybe models are like ethnic groups in people. Outside that there is the whole issue of personality of the individual knife.

Hope I'm not bringing the HI stuff down by saying this but...looking at Howard's pic there and the one at the HI site makes me think two things I like about the Malla 1-it just "grabs" me to look at that khuk,no two ways about it (though sorry Howard I like wood over horn or antler) so it'll be the first one I get 2-it looks almost (blade wise) like the Windlass service khuk not too wide and the weight is close so I have no doubt it'll chop and their size is close enough to be easy to cram on my crowded LBE belt (12in is as short as I care to go on a woods chopper trail knife) and I chopped some insane sized trees with my Windlass!

btw....has anyone nicknamed this one "smiley"? I think it kinda looks like it's smiling with that cho cut-out :D which is another reason I like this one.

*edit* here's the wood handeled one on the HI site that make's my senses sing :D

Holy Toledo! I don't have a malla. How did that happen? :D

Beautiful.

Krull, buy the one that calls to you.

JEEZ, HOWARD, THAT'S BEAUTIFUL!!

I mean, uh, it pains me that you were sent one that has too much weight. Allow me to trade you for one that is suits you better. Or, if you don't like the style at all, just go ahead and send it.

(I'll let you know if this works, guys.)

This one and me get along just fine.

I wish I had been here when stuff like this was available, but then it's probably just as well as I would probably be living under a railroad bridge somewhere...

Norm, you are. Magic is where and when you find it. I'm sure there's a railroad bridge in your future.

I want a Malla, and Howard's picture is driving me nutz. That light horn is beautiful Howard. I bet that is a prized posession.

Yes, it is.

Man alive, Howard, I have two Mallas and I'll trade 'em both to you for that one...

No thanks Mike. This one sings to me.

That's Bill's photography. This is the picture he posted on one of his forum offerings. There was no history posted and it was not called a Malla. I got it because it was special. Bill got the scoop on its origin later.

That sounds like an excellent basis for a decision.

A terrible oversight! Fortunately you can take care of the problem.

That pic of Howard's drove me to get my own malla too ! ;)

Steve you've just gotta get on and retake the pictures of your collection all racked up. I wanna see the updated pic. I'd guess your collection is pretty liquid since I've noticed you offering up really special blades in the upcoming drawing. You are one of the good ones. Get yourself a Malla and review it for those of us who must hold out for a while.

Funny thing about my Malla by kumar........there is no U.B. mark. and has a straight edge, not convex.

Howard, if your Malla had a little less bend and a little more belly, it'd be my 16.5" WWII!

I love that knife.

I was the original owner of the wood handled Malla on the HI site. I really liked the knife, but it never really spoke to me so I traded it. It was not a light knife. I can't remember the specs off hand, but I know it was in the neighborhood of 2 1/4 pounds.
