The Manix 2 Click

I had a problem where the plastic cage would feel like it would catch when I went to close the blade. I would pull back on the cage, it would feel like it would catch, then there would be a "click" sound, and then the blade would close. It took enough force that it made me think something was catching or hanging up on something.

I tried everything to fix it. I took the thing apart and sanded down a ridge on the metal piece that houses the ball bearing and plastic cage. That didn't work. After that, I tried sanding off a ridge on the stem (little straight plastic piece) on the plastic cage because I thought that might be catching on the spring as I tried to close the knife. That didn't work.

After that, I looked all over online and saw some suggestions of opening the blade, very slightly loosening the screws that hold in the metal piece that holds the ball bearing and plastic cage, pressing the sharpened edge against something (safely, obviously), and then retightening the screws. That didn't work either.

I almost gave up. On a whim, I put a drop of oil on the tang of the blade (the area the ball bearing rides against) and on the ball bearing itself. I have no idea why, but that immediately fixed the clicking.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but the oil I used was CLP and the knife was an S110V model.

I have I think 8 of them, only the recent XL Jade M4 version has a click. My newest one is the LW Rex45 and it doesn't click.

I don't think the click in the ball bearing lock is what the OP was speaking of this time. On some Manix 2s when you just start to open the blade there is a click ... it doesn't interfere with anything really it's just something you notice if you have some without it. I just purchased a LW in Rex 45 and hadn't noticed it at all until I was messing with it after this post and if I open it very slowly I can hear it. Opening in in normal use I hadn't picked up on it at all. I have read some people seem to have a more audible "click" and some say they can even feel it slightly ... that isn't the case with this LW but it does have a tiny "click".

This video in the first post of this thread is basically the problem I was having:

Interesting. I've got two Manixes and haven't noticed that kind of click on either. The problem I had bugged me because it made closing the blade a more difficult. If it's a sound that doesn't make opening and closing the blade more difficult, I'd prefer not to have it, but I don't think it would bug me enough to get rid of the knife.

I have a black/dlc blade manix2. It never clicked until I took it apart for cleaning and put it back together. I have found that putting a little grease in the cage where they ball sits can help eliminate the click, but it’s not 100%.

I don't think any of my 3 G10 or 1 LW models do it but now I'm curious and going to pull them out of the safe tonight and check lol.

I never noticed the click until this thread.
The click doesn't bother me at all, I didn't notice it until reading this.
Still one of my favorite knives.

The Manix is one of my favorite models from Spyderco. I own 5 of them and 2 of them click. Just got a new REX45 Manix in yesterday and it clicks right out of the box. I know it doesn't affect function or lockup, but it bugs my OCD. Anyone else's Manix have that click when you first push the blade open?
I just got the SPY27 model with blue G10. It didn't click at first. But after epening it about 20 times I noticed the same click you are all talking about here. And this thread is from ages ago. So here in 2025 it's still happening. I was very worried that I got a dud so I oiled it up, cleaned it best I could without taking it apart, and it still happens every time I open it. I'm just really glad that others experience it and it doesn't seem to be any kind of issue. I'm totally relieved, I didn't want to have to wait another week to get a replacement. And to be totally honest, I was really hoping it was normal because I really like the way it sounds, it reminds me of a gun. If I need to be quiet, I'll use my Bradford Guardian
For what they cost compared to some of the other Spydercos, I have been floored playing around with this all day. The local shop had mine marked down to about $180. Its the blue G10 model. Its a few bucks more than ordering online, but i got to handle the knife first, support local business, and walk out the door with knife in hand.

However, for the money, I dunno if I remember a better value in the $100-$200 knife range. Super solid, super sharp. It is a pretty wide knife in the pocket. However, most of the time, I only use my pocket to carry my knife as it is. Width isn't an issue for me. I will say that it going to take me some time for muscle memory to develop closing it. I keep thumbing for a frame lock or liner or fumbling around for a back lock like on my Native and Endura :D

Anyway, sorry about the drift. Im just really enjoying the Manix 2. I dont get too excited about many sub $400 pocket knives these days, but this Spyderco really bowled me over. My has no clicking at all.
Have you tried the Demko Shark Lock? I'm considering the AD20.5Ti. The shark lock seems really cool and fun. But a lot of people complain about it being hard to open or that it rubs their thumb raw. I'm wondering if their is any truth to that, or if it's like the Manix 2. I heard a lot of people complaining about it saying it's really hard to use the lock, too stiff, hurts their thumb. But I just got my Manix 2 and sure it's stiff, but it's still easy to use and just makes it feel more robust and solid. Anyways, I'm considering a demko and just want to know what people think about the shark lock.

When you start to open the Manix 2 the ball bearing moves back a little off the detent (closed) position. As the opening rotation continues the ball moves up a bit on to the tang. The small movement of the ball bearing contacting the tang is the cause of the audible click. All of the Manix 2’s I’ve owned have had it. I also think it sounds kinda cool. Demkos shark lock is also great and has its own unique sound. Very “gun” like.
