The Many Uses Of Knives

Scraping price tags off of merchandise or stickers off of glass come to mind, as does de-burring plactic nubs off of model airplanes and such.

Cleaning the dirt out from under your fingernails. Come on, you know you've done it.

Contact lense adjuster!

Geez, one slip and it ends up like a scene out of Un Chien Andalou!

Odd things I've used a knife for? Only thing that springs to mind now is to unscrew some bolts holding a scythe blade retention ring to a snath. Mind you, I used a cheapo flea market Pakistani job. :D

to shave haha if its sharp enough and also to make money kids at my school will trade all sorts of stuff for knives even cheap ones its great

I used My Izula and My Surefire 6P to make a door wedge to hold a door open while movin' a desk.

Since I became a knife enthusiast back in the early to mid 90s I've been really amazed at how great of an overall tool a knife has the potential of being.

But on the other hand don't confuse versatility as being a license for outright "abuse". Because there are jobs people do with knives that are totally out of bounds. For instance there are tricks you can do with Hawkbills and fixed blades that you can't or should I say "shouldn't" do with conventional folders.

The knife is probably one of man's very oldest tools and one that will be here when we are all long gone. Many other types of knife designs make them far more useful. Just high quality serrated edges like those of Spyderco's have kind of re-written the rule book in many ways.

What blows me away is how many people see me using my Spyderco folder and then ask me why I feel a need to have a knife. My response to most of them is "I don't know how anyone functions without one".

But if you're going to own a knife make sure it's a really good one. Because a third world piece of low dollar junk is truly not even worth what you paid for it. I consider my knife rights just as important as my gun rights. And I consider my knife to be the most important tool I own.

Hmm, it's well past April 1st...

Seriously, that's almost like asking how many numbers there are.

Here's my "top o' the pops" list:

Engraver to scribe club's name inside guard of fencing weapons.

Cutting burrs out of dog's fur.

Stripping bark to make walking sticks.

Cutting out steel splinters from hands.

Spreading contact posts in banana plugs.

Wood and Leather work of all kinds.

Temporary coat peg.

Ruler.

Plumb bob.

Pushing/pulling wires through tubes.

Wrench.

Notching wood to stop saw from skating on first cut.

Substitute for Yo-Yo.

Chance to tell youngsters about the difference between a tool and a weapon.

Here's a few more:

Splinter removal

deburring plastic

Peeling off stubborn stickers

Peeling the back off stubborn stickers

Knife handle to crease paper

stitch remover (usually in cloth)

remove those annoying clothing tags (and mattress ones that say "do not remove under penalty of law")

coaxing out paper jammed in the copy machine

coffee stirrer

use the nail nick to push a needle through thick cloth when you don't have a thimble

test soleniod magnets

Put a clip on an Al Mar Hawk UltraLight and use it instead of a tie clip

You have made me sit up and take notice. What trick can you do with a Hawkbill that you shouldn't do with a conventional folder?

I am genuinely intrigued.

I knife can be used as a weapon for SD (suprised it hasnt been mentioned)

or for grafting trees :D

It kind of depends what knife I have in my pocket; think have done most of the things mentioned; sometimes can't get furnace filter to come out easily; poke knife blade in end and out it comes. Often use one to open bird feed/suet when filling feeders; dress elk/deer; put that little slit in microwave dinners; and on and on and......

Mine just make me happy. No matter if they are in my hand or my pocket or on my desk. Just having them around makes me smile. All the other uses listed are just bonuses to me...;)

:D

Before I was told that all my knives were weapons, I used them to put butter and jam on rolls in the morning.

It's knives that help me get rid of that pesky cash in my checking account! That seems to be mostly what I use them for.

You've got that right. I had another $700 sprout wings and fly out the door yesterday.

I found this years back in an online publication called "Preparedness Moment." I was not written by a knife nut, just a guy who saw his pocketknife as an indispensable tool. I think the author was a physician.

That is freakin awsome. I'm going to mail this to everyone I know who always asks me why I carry a knife. Very simply and clearly stated.

To add a legitment comment, when I was a teenager working in a pizza joint I used to use my swiss army knife to un-jam tokens from the video games.

A pencil sharpener and a writing instrument, because I don't always have a pencil, but I always have a knife.
