After reading the review in Tactical Knives magazine and perusing Les' web site, I'm seriously considering picking up one of these beauties. Anyone have one? What's been your experience?

Thanks for any feedback you have!

I think they're sold out.

But barring that, I think anything by Broadwell is going to be great.

its gone.

there are some custom makers who will set you up with what your looking for though, for less money.

Blues, that's some collection you have! I just perused the photos. Congrats on putting together a very impressive grouping.

Anyone know the feasibility of either finding one for re-sale (don't laugh) or getting Broadwell to do a Part II of the edition? 25 seems quite a small number to put out.....

First off, thanks for the kind remarks, I appreciate it.

I'd suggest contacting Les or David directly to find out options/alternatives.

There are a host of other great makers who work in that genre as well. Les' website is a good place to start and he is a good resource for you to consult.

Hi Paladin,

I started the Vanguard series of knives as a direct result of reading and hearing from custom knife buyers that Tactical knives would never be collectable.

I have been quoted in more than one international knife magazine as saying that David Broadwell makes the best sub-hilt fighter in the world.

Trust me when I tell you it took some pretty fancy talking to get David to make 25 each of the Vanguard MLR's.

I had David do 25 (as are the other Vanguard) knives to increase their demand in the after market and thus their colletability.

Just so you know, there are a few of the MLR Fighter without the sub-hilt and the 5 1/2" version.

David and I will be coming out with another Vanguard knife later this year. Although, it will be limited to only 15 knives.

Those of you who are looking for another world class tactical sub-hilt fighter. I will be introducing the next Vanguard sub-hilt fighter. This will again be limited to 25 and will be made by Schuyler Lovestrand. I hope for these knives to be available for the Blade Show this year.

Maurice, don't keep it a secret. I'd like to know as probably everyone else reading this thread. Who is the maker that does comprable work to David's for less money. I would like to get in touch with that maker.

Paladin, when you are talking about a sub-hilt fighter, you need to do your homework. There are only a handful of makers who can make a truly great sub-hilt fighter.

I think you will find that most, if not all are equal or more money than David's knife.

Please email me off line if you have any other questions.

Oh, Thank you to Bob Kasper, Steven Dick and Tactical Knives for doing such a great article on the Vanguard MLR Series.

les,
there is no one to my knowledge that will make the same quality product for less.what i was saying was that makers will make a sub-hilt fighter for him,for less dollar,if thats what he wants.the quality and materials wouldnt be the same of course.
these are some high quality knives.very few could reach that level of perfection for less.

no where did i say the work is comparable.

This is tough to say, as i think Broadwells work is among the best.... but I like Jim Siskas sub hilts out of any ive seen. Im not sure if Jim would even make a "tactical" sub hilt, but they are my favorites indeed.

Hi Maurice,

My mistake. When I read your statement "there are some custom makers who will set you up with what your looking for though, for less money.

I thought you meant comparable. As we all know anything can be made cheaper. But if the quality of the original knife is not there. Then the maker you are recommending isn't really going to "set you up with what your looking for".

That maker will just be attempting to make a similar knife for less money".

This is generally where the novice and sometime experienced collector makes a mistake. Especially with a sub-hilt fighter.

In the long run, spending less money on a complicated and difficult knife to make, is not the way to go.

Because of David's skill his work will continue to be in demand. Where as the lower priced maker, may or may not improve enough for the collector to even hope that the knife will maintain it's value.

I apologize to the 2% out there who keep every knife they buy. However, the reality is that most of the people that visit this forum, for their own reasons, buy, sell and trade.

By doing your homework you will save alot of money and maybe even make some on occasion. Either way, it gives you more money to buy more knives.

Maurice, I appreciate you posting again to clarify your previous post. You probably just saved someone some money.

Maurice, thanks for the advice. I'm going to keep my SH to the right bladesmith, not try to save a buck up front only to be left with an inferior product. I realize it's a difficult knife to make and only a few do it the right way. I've just purchased RJ Martin's Quest through Les and a beautiful Bowie from Matt Lamey to "tide me over" until I can get the SH made. Hopefully by Broadwell himself. In addition, I'm having Normark do a special conceal carry sheath for my new Lightfoot Pit Bull. And I'm signing up for the September Riddle of Steel, assuming my business schedule holds up to permit me to go.

I don't collect to sell or trade. I guess I'm one of the few that buys to keep. I'd like to hand down my collection some day to my daughter. Perhaps some day, I'll convince her to train in defensive knife and get into the hobby.

Thanks for your input, guys. As always, I learn more with each of your posts.

I must say, Les, I was one of those 2% who had never sold a knife. That is until I saw the MLR series. Just had to have a couple of those! Suffice to say, I had to let more than a few go

Really looking forward to their replacements though
