...when your selection of knives will save the day. ;)

A female friend of mine from the first time around in university just contacted me.
She's doing an adventure race, and needs to bring a pocketknife...so of course I was the first person she thought of! :D

So no, I'm not wasting time and money acquiring all these different knives...I'm just preparing to equip the world for adventure, one person at a time.

I know the feeling. Every year at Christmas I bring an assortment for opening those Amazon and Zappos boxes.

Hell yes! The countless times I have been asked to open something because folks know I am the guy with the knife are great. What is not so great is that said folks haven't figured out that they could carry a knife to open stuff for themselves....

Ah, but then you wouldn't get to heroically save the day. ;)

All the people who need you to use your knife for them are a ready-made reason for the need to carry a knife. :)

And a reason to buy an assortment for any occasion.

I am that guy as well that people come to when they need stuff cut. My favorite is when I see one of my coworkers savagely scratching and pulling at a item trying to get it apart. I stare at them in amusement, how barbaric, as I hand them a blade and watch the madness end.

I would trade every single time that someone asked to use my knife in a non emergency situation for each one of those people to realize the sheer handiness of a knife, even if they carried a SAK on their keychain.

Knife awareness = friendliness
Knife friendliness = less looking at a knife as a "weapon" and more like a tool.
That would equate to us being able to carry what we felt like, not being relegated to carrying an "office folder" or something like that, when a DPx heat looks too tactical but has a shorter blade then a "prettier" gentleman's knife.

I'm cool either way. :)
Who knows, maybe my friend will decide she wants to keep it if it turns out to be handy during the race. :)
I love the fact that a knife was required equipment for the race.

Which race? I want in

SCAR (South Coast Adventure Race).

I get the feeling that most adventure races will include a knife as required safety equipment.

Oh it's an adventure race...... I was picturing some sort of cross country marathon that encouraged knife carry. In THAT scenario, I'd bring the biggest and heaviest mofo I owned and strap it to my back, then take up a leisurely pace and keep shouting "I'm an F-ing tortoise!!" at everyone who passed me:D

But I guess it wouldn't be the same for an adventure race...

You could do the same for an adventure race...it would make it more adventurous for everyone else. :D

It looks like you have to produce something really good...or...we'll ALL look bad.

Actually, it looks like she wants to go with the Cold Steel Tuff Lite, as it's the right size and weight for what she wants.
Today I took it apart and smoothed out the action, and rounded the parts that were sharp but shouldn't be.

I thought the Spyderco Junior might have fit the bill also, but she preferred the Tuff Lite...I think she may also have felt less pressure with a less expensive knife.
I told her if she loses it, not to worry...I'll just buy another one anyway. :D

Spyderco Native worked well for me, super light weight and stows easy in any pack or pocket, very tough. I prefer a locked knife out there too.

I'm usually the Christmas Morning Knife Guy, when I go visit my parents. Sadly (or not) this year, my knife didn't even get asked for. My brothers have taken to carrying knives more often, and I saw at least 3 knives being passed around for opening packages.

At least my efforts to convert are not wasted. :D

My efforts haven't been as effective. My father carries a Texas Toothpick, but is not willing to carry anything larger. At my 2 year old niece's birthday party, last year, I was the only one with a knife to open all of her toys' packages. Stupid me happened to be carrying a 4" folding cleaver style blade. I just about gave everyone a heart attack butchering a "Jake and the Neverland Pirates" box.

It always pays to have a "people friendly" tool at hand.
Ie, a leatherman, SAK, or traditional...

For me, it's the leatherman on my belt that gets pulled out when a 4" folder might be too much for someone to handle:D

I started carrying this little guy, about 6 months ago, and it hasn't left my pocket since. A true EDC knife, if you will.

I use the nail file and point to dig under my fingernails all the time lol
