"The Monster"-12" W-2 Camp Knife

One of my customers wanted a "monster" camp knife/machete, big enough to clear brush, or make a shelter...

Like a house! Wow, that rocks, John! Super camp monster...W2 with great handle design...should be a workhorse.

Thanks for sharing. Happy camper, I guess!!

Guys 'n Gal, glad ya'll seem to like this one. I was surprised how taken I was with this straight-ahead design when it was finished. Don't have one of my own knives, but may have to do one of these for myself. There's some brush needs clearing...

Aaron, Mr. Moran's handle is probably the grand-daddy, but I have to admit that for shaped handles, I look at Jason Knight's for inspiration; just don't pull it off as well!

Kevin, LOA 17", blade-12" by 2" at the widest, and just under 5/16" at the spine, with strong distal taper. I would have started it at 1/4" thick, and tapered, and will do so if I make one for myself, but the owner wanted the weight for heavy chopping, and said he didn't plan to swing it all day long.

Handle design is something I pay a whole lot of attention to, and this one made me wish I could reach into my computer screen and grab hold of it. It really looks like a superb design. Were I guessing design influences, I would have said Fisk (Rojo and Woojack models), Farr, Knight.

That transition on the top line from the rounded, convex spine in the center, down to the concave area approaching the slightly dropped, but flared butt is going to contribute to a a LOT of chopping power on this piece. And that's in addition to that massive and no doubt razor sharp blade that would probably chop a small log in half if you accidentally dropped it on one.

It must have taken a larger than normal block of walnut to shape that handle.

Great job.

Very, very nice!

I too like all your pieces, but, like Danbo, this is one of my alltime favorites.

Best,

John

VERY nice, John. That thing kinda straddles the fence between "camp knife" and "bush sword":D
