The mora companion

i wouldn't spend to much time researching and pondering the pitfalls of a $15 knife...

Buy it and use it. See if it works for you. Spend that "research" time outside cutting things and you will learn more than sitting at the computer.

this.

???
No offense, but your MTech is not suitable for batoning. As mentioned, more research...

I have HD and regular Moras. FWIW I prefer the thinner blade in this knife, for what I use it for. The thinner blade slices better and gets deeper into the wood with less effort. It's also better for other tasks like food prep. Good luck.

The most affordable Condors in the range are very good value for the money and their steel is excellent (420 HC, 1075, 1095, tried and tested old value...) : Bushcraft Basic, Hivernant, Two Rivers Skinner (just those I tried...). The finish is on the rough side, the blades are rather thick but these are knives you can whack without any worries. For fine cutting, I keep with my Mora Classic Original N°2. Lighter build but an outstanding cutter with its laminated steel (discontinued, unfortunately).

My two most used knives aside from my edc are my Becker bk16 and my Mora companion. I bought the Mora for $13 and never expected to love it as much as I do. It will do anything except chop and baton very well. A decent hatchet and a Mora can accomplish almost anything in the woods. Get one and have fun.

Best blade to price to ratio hands down!
I carry one on me 5 days a week for work in my Carhartts. One sits in my truck and one other sits in my hiking day pack.
Mora's are a staple for me.

The mora knifes are quite simply the best value in a knife. They perform many times above their price. I always have a mora on me when in the woods. I have not found anything I cant do with a mora that you should do with a knife. I have 6 of them. I cant say enough good things about moras. My favorite is the companion and a bahco made by mora which is a clipper with a thinner blade than companion. If i had to choose one go with companion. Their stainless is 12c27 and outstanding. their carbon is simular to 1095 and also outstanding. They are the sharpest factory knifes I have. They need to be sharpened differently than other knifes. google it its easy. So choose one and for $15 try it. I guarantee you will love it.

It's a good knife, I find the handle a little thin which kind of cramps up my hand but other than that definetly a capable knife

I own 2 companions (SS & HD), a HighQ, an all around 748, a 510 carbon steel, and the wife has an orange Companion.

Needless to say I like 'em, make for nice little cheap throw in additions on knife shopping carts, and one of the best bang-for-buck knives out there.

I don't think the Condors, cheap as they are, are very good steel or HT. IMHO and all that.

Is this based upon personal experience?

I really couldn't possibly disagree with you more. From my own experience with my Bushlore and my Moonshiner, and I can very confidently say that the steel is great. Takes a very fine edge, easy to sharpen, easy to touch up in the field, and i have used my knives for everything from fine cutting tasks, to battoning, to prying. I've gotten the Moonshiner bent pretty well during prying tasks and it bounced right back to being straight as an arrow.
I recommend Condor very very highly.

that said, for $15, you can't possibly beat the Mora Companion. I've even used mine while doing construction work in place of a box cutter. My wife and I each have a stainless model in our emergency bags in the cars, and I have one that is part of the EDC rotation. Fantastic experience with them. Wife says it feels like a "steak knife that can do anything."

So should I be looking at the number 1 or companion more? I want start learning to strike out on my own. I have my recurve now and an MTech xtreme fighting knife (for battoning and heavy duty use) and I think I want a mora for more delicate use like skinning game, gutting fish, feather sticks, ferro rods, that sort of thing. And if the companion is recommended should I get regular or heavy duty?

A couple mods u should think of

Patina for rust protection
File down spine to 90 for better ferro strike
If you'll be wearing this a lot get better sheath(kydex)(leather) as mine has fallen out several times

Also it's so cheap just buy it.

I love mine for feather stick

Get a companion and do your own torture test. See if you like. for under $20 cant go wrong. It is one of the most well regarded knives in terms of value out there.

I am pretty fond of my 612, like a No.2 with a single guard. The Companion does grip better. I would not trouble to replace the sheath on a Companion. The knife sort of locks in place and is well contained. The wood-handled ones can come out, though, and the sheath is really cheesy. A leather replacement can be had for about $12.00, roughly doubling the price of the knife.

the literature is replete with tales of guys who pack a Mora as a 'backup' to their $200.00 bushcrafting knife and in the end, the Mora does all the heavy lifting.
