What is the most cost efficient way (IE: Metal to use? Equipment needed?) to begin making sharp, strong knives with a differential temper line (hamon, whichever you prefer)? Will I need an expensive ($500+) furnace for the heat treatment? I just need to be setup for a hobby sort of thing, and they don't need to be gorgeous, I just love a good sharp knife with a nice temper line.

Thanks :)

If you buy Wayne's book from the link deker gave you you save 5 or 6 bucks right from the start. Wayne's been working on a cheap skate anvil the last couple weeks. Not sure if he'll write a book on it but don't be surprized to see something in Blade Mag about it.

build the tools yourself and see where the hobby takes ya.
If it goes a distance, you then would've made nuff money
or had nuff fun to justify _buying tools
