The Most Powerful Handgun in the World

About fifteen years ago I hand loaded and shoot a .357 Herrett (spelling?) This is a 30-30 necked out to .357. After the first three rounds it scared me so much I closed my eyes on the fourth round. I still managed to qualify for hand gun hunting with it. I have been shooting for 45 years this is the only gun that ever scared me to pull the trigger.

The most pwerful taht anyone could call readily available is the 454 Casull. In Ruger Super Redhawks and Taurus Raging Bulls it is actaully managable. A 360 grain bullet at 1500 FPS is a hell of a hitter, and it will (and has) taken the biggest game on earth. As an aside, it will also punch through most body armor, although this is not really a concern to police because they are A) huge and B) not made for novices. I have actually only shot one once, but it wasn't too bad.

The Magnum Research BFR is chambered for 45/70, is available for about a grand, and, judging by the fact that the same revolver is cahmbered for the 444 Marlin, should be loadable to very potent levels.

You can achieve amazing power levels even with a .44 Magnum, if you have one designed for some excess pressure. Garrett Cartridges makes a .44 Magnum +P cartridge (that they recommend only for use in Super Redhawks and Raging Bulls) that pushes a 330 grain bullet at 1385 fps. That gets it up into the same range of muzzle energy as most .454 loads. :)

The funny thing is, technology is gradually taming what used to be some very nsty recoil. Porting, a briliant idea in the first place, has evolved into a sophisicated and very effective system. New grips use the materials you find in high-tech running shoes to cushion and distribute the pressure. The results, especially when all taken together, are absolutely amazing.

My Raging Bull, fired with average .44 Magnum rounds, offers less perceived recoil than some snubbie .38s I've shot. I can do a convincing double-tap with that thing.

I'm not sure about everyone else, but I have a difficult time taking this one serious. The company advertises "micro nucleic" ammo for the 50BMG:

"Most of you have already heard all of the stories about how the U.S. military used depleted Uranium as the substrate material for the projectiles lobbed at the Iraqis during "Desert Storm". Now there are all of these quasi-radioactive chunks of metal messing up all of that pretty desert scenery ...not to mention the 500 year half-life that many generations must face. Birdman Weapons Systems, Inc. realized the potential of these heavy metal projectiles in combination with today's modern Celeron/Pentium microcircuitry achievements. We combined these two hi-tech advancements in technology to bring you a mind bending MicroNuclear blast in a tiny, convenient and affordable package. The blast factor of just one single Nuke50 projectile is equivalent to 1,200 pounds of TNT! That's SERIOUS firepower folks! Not only that, you don't have any chunks of Uranium laying around for someone else to have to clean up!"

They also include a phony video of one going off.

Does anybody actually know someone who has fired a "Birdman" 50 BMG weapon?

Centaur and all, this "Birdman Barret 50 BMG pistol" is a wind-up/joke that has been on the net for the last 2 years to my knowledge, and probably a lot longer.

Does anyone remeber the Charlse Bronson movie (Death Wish 3?) where he's clearing out the gang controlling some depressed neighborhood. He goes to a mailbox place and gets "Wolty" shipped to him. It was a semi auto the you could adjust for different pressure loads. I don't remember the caliber but it was huge.

I didn't see that movie, but there is a gun (or there WAS) called a Wildey. It did have an adjustment for pressure; you could open the vents way up for weaker loads and close them down a bit for full house loads to keep the slide from battering. If memory serves me (quit laughing, my pants are on right today) it first came out in 9mm Win Mag, and .45 Win Mag. The 9mm died pretty quick, but a 1911 type pistol called the LAR Grizzly came out in .45 Win Mag and the cartridge lived a bit longer.

Yes, the gun in the movie was a 475 Wildey if I recall correctly. I've handled them and have friends who have shot them. They were supposed to be good shooters but they are very large and you have to handload the 475 round.

FBI statistics show that more people have been killed with a .22 then any other calibur weapon ever made.
