"the most respected knifemaker on Earth"

In my mind, I have the most respect for Ed Fowler. Watch his video on making knives and you will see what I mean. The passion he has for knives is incredible and his ability to put his thoughts to paper is a gift. I have tons of respect for the man. Wordsmith, knife maker, police officer, rancher,gentleman....he has lived several lifetimes in one life.

Others that come to my mind include but are not limited to:
Hoyt Buck
Bo Randall
Harry Morseth
Bob Dozier
Frank Richtig
Bill Scagel (of course!)

I'm with the All Knowing fanged-one on this. That is just obnoxious, arrogant, and self-important. Embarrassing.

I mean really, knowledgeable buyers are going to be turned off by that. Only the simps and newbies and other suspects would get any boost from such claims.

I really hope Eric Shaw (about 3 posts up) has it right, and that Ernie just didn't read the copy that his web developer or PR person etc... put on the new page. Then again, I can't imagine putting my own small business' commercial web page out without scrutinizing every detail. ?!?!

Maybe one of the genuflective and oh-so-devoted Usual Suspects will drop a note to Ernie, and offer some suggestions on restrained humility in copy writing.

Maxx, I would have to second your Kit Carson and Darrel Ralph! They are both well respected leading knife makers that not only make fine custom knives but also go above and beyond the call of duty helping others. Always new styles coming out, with the colaberation of some fine knife companies they are bringing there knife into production so many others can enjoy there efforts. They are always there helping out and answering questions for guys on a routine basis with nothing to gain but friendship and maybe some down the road competition. Extremely fine gentleman who I hold in high regaurds and am lucky to call my friend!

Damn - it's interesting to see how kicked around we get for liking Ernie's work, and having the willingness to defend it because we think it's great.

Who's the most respected maker? Got me. I like (and want knives from) many different makers - Emerson, Elishewitz, Lightfoot, Weiland, Crawford, Boguszewski, Onion, Ryan, etc. I don't CARE if they're the most respected maker (or if they claim to be). I like their work, and would be proud to say I owned a part of their vision.

Wow, tough one. Probably Loveless and Moran.

Life is good.........

In my view the maker's claim that was the reason this thread was started does not even make the list. I did get a good laugh though.

Not to sound like a total kiss-ass, but Darrel Ralph, Kit Carson, and Rob Simonich are the makers I respect most in the knife industry. They are all great guys and are really pushing the envelope with new materials and designs. A big part of earning my respect is their dedication to perfecting their art and pleasing the customer, no matter what. In my dealings with them, they are the tops.

Later,
Chris

Carson, Simonich, Gibbs. Nothing need to be said . You already know.

Moran the pioneer.. without him we wouldnt be here.

Fisk... undying passion and forward thinking.

The original post didn't ask for the maker "universally" most respected and I couldn't answer that anyway. So, for me,
in alphabetical order, the two I respect most are:
Harkins, Jeff
McHenry, Bill

1. Bill Moran, 60 plus years of hammering. 2. Gil Hibben makes a nice knife, and can kick all our asses while doing it! RKBA!

There have been a lot of good answers to the original question here and it makes me happy to see that there are few defending the "maker's" boast. If indeed, the person in question does not know what is on his website, he needs to prioritize better. How busy can a CEO of a business be(especially one with his own name on it) to not know what his adverts say? This could have serious legal ramifications if your copywriter said something REALLY dumb! Doesn't someone have to ok this stuff? Someone whose supposed to be a professional?
I don't know, I'm just a humble consumer with my nose to the grindstone, so I can afford these trinkets, just asking.
Of course, if he DOES know and approves, we may have discovered Mr. Thompson's (CS fame)
long lost brother!

(BTW, Bob Terzoula was making tactical knives that have all the same features YEARS before anyone heard of the "most respected etc", I don't hear any fantstic claims from him.)

Anyone can claim to be anything that they want, as long as they don't use it to defraud. But that does not make it so. I could claim to be Jesus Christ or the Buddha, but that would not make it so, and I know it. As long as he makes a quality product and does not defraud people, I can't get very excited about it.

Personally, I would put Jerry Fisk, Bob Loveless, and Bob Moran right up there at the top of my knife smiths and Bo Randall (deceased), Sal Glesser, and Chuck Buck up there as company heads.

If someone has to tout THEMSELVES as being "the most respected", then they are probably not. If it were true then everyone would know it. Respected I can buy. When you put most in front, it is a big jump, and less credible.

I would have to agree with Mike..Before I started hanging out here and With Alan. Hibben was known. I had never heard of DDR, Rob Simonich, Loveless or any of the other great makers.

I was so sheltered! AAAAHHHHHHH! I have found the light..

One hundred years ago there would have been a different list. In a hundred years time there might be a list of light sabre makers.

What I want to know is where do all these great knives end up. I'm sure there is an elephant graveyard, next to the knife pile which is second right from that bic pen heap, behind the key mountain, next to those lost lighters

I just read the Emerson Letter and it is actually well written in terms of marketing presentation. I believe that Emerson and his company truly believe that they really are the world's best (just as other companies like Spyderco and Benchmade would probably believe the same.) It's marketing for a company! Perhaps people need to realize that Emerson is (was) a custom maker who was able to move on to production knives. We should respect him for that aspect. Emerson knives are used by some military and government organizations (but so are Camillus, Kabar, and Benchmade). It is also true that other makers either invented or came up with certain "tactical" knife features before Emerson, but he certainly was involved in popularizing it.

Now, as to the most respected, like others have already stated, Bill Moran, Loveless, Henry, Randall, Scagel, Ruana, etc...

My picks for favorite old time makers include. W.W Cronk, Scagel,Moran,Nichols,Al Barton.

Favorite traditional makers are Fisk,Hendricson,Connor,Winkler

Favorite new age non traditional makers are.Fujisaka,Broadwell,Reverdy,Bennica,Blanchard,Harkins,Eatonanf Feugen

Favorite up and cummer I have to say Bailey Bradshaw even though he has been arround for a while I think he is an amazing talent

And lastly the most handsome ......ME!!!!!
