Thanks Yvsa. That brings up another question that I have about testing hardness but I think that I am going to put it in a new post to get more attention.

I decided to use -very- dilute Ferric Chloride.
This revealed the zones very clearly.
Lots of other common acids to try:
various citrus juices
phosphoric acid
oxalic acid
others
