OK, I'm looking for someone to blame for this knifes demise, and seeing as the timing of things, Turber, I'm gonna blame you. Please let me know if I should put blame elsewhere, but it seems like your hand was in a lot of this.

When I saw the first Proto of this knife, I drooled. Seriously. It was all that a knife should be. Now my mouth is bone dry.

Now this is Biggest Crock of S*#@ disappointment I have ever seen.
Why don't we just re-name the thing "SOCOM ELITE MARK 2" This time with all the recurve you would never want.

How did we go from Ti handle, cool thumb lugs, fail proof lock and all around big, bad-ass look, to an undersized Aluminum handled sissy knife with a Lock that has been proven to fail.

If this is what will "sell" than I guess all those other folks using quality materials and ingenuity in design are doing it all wrong.

I blame Turber in part for talking MT into this (as I believe he did) and the guys at MT for going with it. Why don't they just sell the whole damn shop and become "Microtech, a subsideary of Frost Cutlery".

Let's just say if this is what the Amphibian is going to be, then I will be proud NOT to own one. I'll take my hard earned money and go buy a sebenza or a custom that actually IS made with Titanium. Something made to be the best damn knife it can be, not the cheapesrt and most cost-effective thing that they can market.

Seriously folks, what is next? Zytel on the UDT handle? Plastica backspacers on the LCC's? Ooooh, I know, how about chrome plated 420 spring steel on out UT blades. I'm sure that would save money.

Or better yet, just slap some carbon fiber on a pez dispencer and call it a day.

I Really hope MT is reading this and that nothing is set in stone yet. I would easily pay $500 for the Amph the way it was originally designed and supposed to be. As is, if you gave me one I would probably sell it and buy myself a case of beer to forget about the whole damn thing.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

What the hell am I saying? NO. I COULDN'T be wrong. I'm right on this one dammit and everyone knows it!

If it is built the way things lie...I WON'T.

Marc, While I don't think the new version is crap, it is definately a backwards step from the prototype. Microtech have seriously underestimated the knowledge/skills of their customers if they think the plunge/cam safety is to hard to close.

I will take a rock solid lock everytime over a suspect lock that is easier to use.

In my humble opinion it isn't the high prices that Microtech have traditionally had that has caused slow sales in the past few years. The tiny, unpracticle knives have been the main cause. The Vector, Kestral etc are good looking knives but are not users in my opinion. A lot of manufacturers seem to be shying away from 4 inch blades and prefering to make blades around 3 inches.
Microtech had the perfect opportunity to make the best hard use folder yet thought of, that would have sold it's backside off but then decided to take the safe, easy route and produce another mainstream folder.

Microtech still makes great knives but the designs are not "customer driven" enough. Microtech is a small specialty operation and should leave the mainstream stuff for the lesser competition.

Cheers

peter

I am humbled in the face of your inspired rant. Lead on, oh great one!

I agree the Amphibian looks like crap is small and weak compared to the proto version. But every knife company makes a loser every now and then. I still love MT because I want the upcomming tanto socom elite in manual action.

Please guys, chill a little!
Send your constructive critisism to MT, i'm sure they will listen (if you don't piss and moan...)

As the design isn't finalized yet we might se some changes based upon our input, which has happen before.

For the record i prefer the original version too, it rocks!

Actually, guys, Mike isn't responsible for many of the changes you see in the current knife.

The Current handle with the Kraton inserts was *not* his idea. Like you, he prefers the Sculptured handle. Whether or not Titanium is possible, I don't know, but I think we are all in agreement, the sculptured handle looks better.

If they are going to stick with the inserts, I'd hope they'd make them a bit more appealing looking than they are now. Don't ask me how, I just know that I don't like what I see.

As for the lock, personally I'd prefer a plunge lock with sliding safety, I don't like the Cam Lock safety at all. That's just me.

Well I had nothing to do with the size or the Ti handle.

The main thing was the Cam lock and unless you actually held it I would reserve judgement. The knife "As Is" would have killed MT not been a saviour. Tony can always ad that later but RIGHT NOW they need something that will SELL. This is just business guys.

I will add more later

Could someone point me to threads explaining the failure of the MicroBar lock? I have a SE (7/00) that locks up rock solid and am wondering if I'm missing something. I personally think it is better than most lock types on the market today.

Chris

Chris, "better than most" still leaves room for an occasional failure. I like the microbar, but it is a kind of liner lock.

Check out MT SOCOM Elite lock problems

I'm more inclined to at least look at this knife now that it is not coming with those stupid looking thumbstuds like on the proto! I think that the SOCOM elite tanto and/or a manual Vector if are still next in line for MT purchases this year, but that's just me...

Paul.

Any folder lock has the possibility of failure under certain conditions. If you want a folder that will not fail, buy a fixed blade.

Mr. 44,

I have to say, the first time the original proto was shown to me and I saw the teardrop shaped thumb studs, my first thought was "WTF!!"

But after actually handling both protos, I actually never gave them a second thought. Up till I saw a picture of the one with round thumb studs. Now I'd like to see the teardrops back.

Lomic

I really have to disagree with you on your "The NEW Amphibian --- What a piece of crap!" comment.

I too would prefer the "Cam Lock" version and the sculpted scales, but I've yet to see any MT product that was less then outstanding.

I'll reserve opinion on the Amphib until I handle one, but I agree with John they have quite a consistant track record from the beginning and imo have helped raise the bar for quality in production knives.

I like the kraton inserts more, but the teardrop thumbstuds need to stay on the production knife. I would be more inclined to buy one in this configuration, as long as it DOES have the Microbar lock and the price point is comparable to the SE.

Chris

Is everyone here missing the fact that they are going to an ALUMINUM handle?

Seriously, both Gerber and BM make all Ti handle folders. Why can't MT?
