The new Becker sheaths dont suck! Mini review

short of a warranty replacement, KaBar does not typically sell JUST the sheaths.

I also noticed that the new sheaths aren't as wide as the older ones by a half inch or so. Gives you more real estate on your belt.

Just received and email back from Ka-Bar (very prompt I might add).

BK-9 Sheath (Item# BK9S) is $19.65 + shipping ($8). I don't know if the shipping charge differs, but I was quoted this shipping price to NJ.

I'm guessing that they'll have other sheaths available. All you have to do is call them up directly to order. Customer service department phone number is 1-800-282-0130

Hello,

I'm new here, well actually I think I registered for this forum a decade or so ago, but have lost the login info. I've got a question or two about these nylon sheaths, hope its appropriate to ask them on this thread.

There are several small nylon webbing tabs on both the sheath pictured above (great photos btw) and on the tweener sheaths, I'm wondering what their purpose is. The sheaths seem really well thought out, and there was obvious effort involved in putting the tabs on, so I figure there must be a reason behind them. I can see the one on the velcro belt loop cover being there for comfort, keeping the snap from digging in under your belt, and I guess the one at the top of the big knife sheath pouch could be to hold it open when accessing the contents, but what about the ones on the bottom backs of both these sheaths and the tweener sheath; and the one on the bottom front of the tweener sheath?

Also, is it possible to remove the plastic blade liner (without damaging it)? I'd like to tighten up the fit on my BK16, it rattles a bit, and I figure if I can get the liner out, a little heat and pressure would probably solve the rattle.

Thanks,

Erik

Those are MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) attachments (also called webbing)--Its a military attachment system that has sorta taken the place of ALICE--It basically allows you to customize your set-up (pack,belt,vest,etc...) with compatible pouches/components

Hmm, I'll admit that I'm of the ALICE generation, so there may well be some points of the MOLLE system that I don't understand, but I don't think the tabs I'm talking about are part of the MOLLE system, at least I don't notice them on other MOLLE gear. In the first picture, on the top sheath, to the far right (below or in the picture, to the right of the MOLLE attachment strap) is a loop or tab of stitched on nylon webbing. The BK16 (15 and 17) sheath has that loop and an identical one on the other side of the sheath. These are the parts I'm interested in. FWIW, on my BK16 sheath, the loops are too small to interface or weave into the MOLLE straps. If they are part of the MOLLE system, I really don't understand their use. It just seems that they are very intentionally placed on the sheaths so I figure there must be a reason for them. Everything on the Becker line seems to have a practical, functional purpose. I guess I'm just wondering what the purpose is behind these loops.

Thanks,

Erik

Oh, my apologies. I misunderstood you. I am not sure what its purpose actually is. It looks like a loop for a leg strap/thigh rig

the webbing loops at top and bottom of the sheath on the back are lashing points so you can attach them to stuff in different ways.
you could also thread a clevis hook onto them for attaching a strap for baldric carry.

Thanks, that makes sense, it seems a little redundant, but then it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Someone must have had a definite purpose in mind when they spec'd the sheaths.

So, on my second question, anyone know if the plastic liner is removable without damaging the liner or sheath? Like I said, I'd like to try heating it up and tightening it a bit, my BK16 rattles a little.

Erik

sorry - forgot to address that.
the liner is sewn into the sheath, but you can soften the top of it with a hair dryer or drop the whole thing in a pot of boiling water to soften it.

To remove the liner there is a very particular row of stitching you have to remove along the back, under those webbing loops you were asking about.

The tab your referring to on the top can be used to release the snap and velcro quickly. Im not sure of the point of the one on the bottom. Also my BK16 sheaths fit on Molle fine. I have it attached to my camelback and use a leather sheath for normal carry.

Sorry for hijacking the thread (great review btw) but does anybody know if the Becker BK2 Campanion is getting the new style nylon sheath like the new ones on the BK9 and BK7?

Call Ka-Bar. I've bought a couple. Unless I'm just a special snowflake, I do think they'll sell the sheaths separately.

I didn't mind the old sheaths but the new ones looks pretty spiffy :). Great review. Thanks!

Thanks for posting this review - the sheaths look sweet, and I hadn't seen the new ones up close until this thread.

they seem to vary on that, but if you beg prettily, special things happen sometimes. i'm not a special enough snowflake to know for sure.

been a while though since i've ordered anything, or begged ;)
