The new blade-tech model

That's FANTASTIC. I couldn't figure out the long slot in the blade when I saw the first pictures.

That's really an innovative, cool design. Jim Preston is right, total folding chef's knife! In the Ulu position, that's probably the only folder anyone would feel comfortable chopping with!

Wow. That is one of the coolest things I've seen lately. That looks like it would be great to throw into a survival kit.

Yup! I can't wait for mine! Mikey "Shavin' Sharp" Vellekamp knows what he's doing, that's for sure. Mark my words, he and Chad "Daywalker" Los Banos are two, up and coming designers you should watch.;)

An excellent idea. First original folding blade design I've seen in years.

Totally agree. Right after mines delivered, I'm gonna order a pizza and tell them not to cut it. Besides looking like the perfect folding chef's knife it looks like it would work quite well as a one handed Mezzaluna. Forget the take out, I'll make my own with some soprasatta de finocchio and fresh basil. This knife is making me hungry.

that's really neat

I was confused by the first picture, wondering how the blade got in the folded position with the edge out. Now I know.

Just to let you guys know...The ULU's are shipping!!! I need to get one of you guys to help me organize a pass-around...Please PM me if you are interested!:D

HEY GANG,

Cool knife, but I am wondering,
does the handle collect much food when you are cutting with it in the ULU position ? Seems to me that a bunch of meat, skin or whatever can junk up the handle pretty good.
And if so,
is there enough open areas in the handle that you can flush the knife in a bucket of water ? (if you have one at a camp site )
I am interested in hearing more about this knife.
take care
Jack

OK guys...I have found someone to organize a pass-around here, so here in a few days the ones of you who sign up can start playing with these babies!:D

I recently received my orange Ulu as well. I decided that I had to have one after handling one at a recent USN meeting.

I handled one in the store today. When trhat thing is locked in the Ulu mode, you have to be very careful when opening it. Just about everybody who I saw handle that model chose to ignore the little instruction sheet that came with it, and most came very close to slicing their fingers when disengaging the lock. Totally ignored the nail nick and grabbed the blade as if to slide it back into pocket knife position with all their force. Even with the nail nick, moving the blade back to the standard pocket knife position is difficult, but I assume this will smoothen up over time and / or lubrication. I think it's an ingenious design that has its places, but unfortunately, my pocket isn't one of them (way too thick for pocket carry). It sure isn't bad for $50 though.

It's pretty easy once you know there is a little button on the handle to push in that dis-engages the lock and that the nail nick is used to help slide the blade back into position.

I cant wait for the up coming titanium handled 154cm bladed version that was hinted at in Knives magazine. Anyone else read the article and pic up that the one in the pic has what looks to be a titanium handle? Just wondering.

As others have said, this is the first truly new folder design in years. Like many good designs the brilliance is in the simplicity. Form really does follow function in this case.

Mikey, who did you envision as your primary market when you designed it?
