The new employees can't afford a Buck knife

And Idaho... once you've given Buck everything they have asked for, and they have finally used up the depreciation of buildings and machinery, and the workers have unionized... say good bye to your "investment". They'll be off to Taiwan, or more likely China to make their product.
I don't think this is really quite fair... Buck only stayed in California for what, 100 years or so? I bet they'd still be there if the state hadn't done their best to make it impossible to run a profitable business. I just don't see any evidence that they're the shifty, fly-by-night operation that you're insinuating.

My own state, Michigan, is loosing good, well paying jobs weekly to other states. After taking advantage of whatever good business environment we offered, they desert us, heading south, usually. What the company offers their new employees is dirt. What the State government where they have moved to gives the company is everything. Tax breaks galore, discounts on utilities, ultra-low worker's comp, relaxed work rules and regulations.

Michigan is a high-tax, high cost of living state. It no longer offers a good business environment, it's kinda like California that way. Why wouldn't any sane businessman leave for a lower cost area? I'd guess about the only things keeping any manufacturing businesses in Michigan these days is the cost of moving or a union stranglehold. You gouge businesses either through high taxes, greedy unions, or crazy environmental laws and they leave if they can. This ain't rocket science.

If the workers unionize and start stripping all the profit out of the company, then I'd expect a move to Taiwan, otherwise I'll be very surprised. They sure stayed in California for a long time after things started getting bad.

Very well put. Now can we please talk about knives or something else important? That is until we can get some pics. of the new facility of course.

The only thing Idaho has given us apart from a warm welcome and a great new work force is training dollars with we are investing in the local area, so shut up and keep your uninformed responces to your self

"Cheaper workers compensation payments, lower labor costs and less expensive electricity bills are luring the famed sport and utility knife manufacturer Buck Knives Inc. from California to Idaho."

Plus the 100,000 bucks to train your workers.

I'm not trying to add fuel to this fire, Phil. But I don't think you were entirely honest in your last post and 'shut up' is as much over the top as the post that started this thread.

I don't feel I need the last word, so I'll end my contributions to this thread here and now. But I would like to see it end on an honest note, Phil...

Why would a company spend 10 millions dollars to build a new factory and millions of dollars to relocate and take care of over 200 employees that are losing jobs move??????????, of course there are savings that are being driven by the cost of doing buisness in California, the reality is stay in California and go out of business, close your doors and move to China, or fight and do something about it.......... So in California we pay 5,000 dollars in Workers comp insurance for every employee we place on the factory floor, in California we Pay 13-15 cents / KWH of electricity in Idaho it's 5 cents and yes in Idaho the wages are less an average house in San Diego costs 500,000 in Idaho 170,000. Buck Knives has a history of long term employees, many of the employees have been with the company for 20 plus years, what does this say about the employee............. we would have loved to have stayed in California but bottom line we could not have survived.

All Buck employees are paid a compedative salary and benefits package that includes insurance for family members.... also employess are issued a free knife and are offered a 40% discount on store purchases on buck product, 9 paid holidays in addtion to vacation and sick pay........... Sorry we did not set the standard of living in Idaho but if you dont like it move to california.

Sounds good to me. Talk about knives and let Buck deal with the move. They are a fantastic company and should be commended for taking a stand to keep their made in the USA.

I don't think Buck should move to Idaho. :grumpy:
I think they should move to my town in Mississippi. :D
We have a plant that has closed recently and is available. Well, part of it, as a greeting card company is going to occupy half of it. And a new spec building is available in our industrial park. Don't you good folks at Buck think you could use a second facility in the Hospitality State? :)

Lots of deer hunting here.

I'm retiring next year and I think it would be interesting making knives. I'd be willing to start out at $7.00 an hour. :D

business is just that, business. If you own a business and can save money by moving to another location by all means do it. People forget that the point of this is to make $$$.

These are not things that they are "giving" Buck, these are things that the state offers to ALL employers.

There is a big difference in a company being "given" something, and a manufacturer simply taking advantage of what's offered.

Ya know, $7 an hour as a starting wage isn't bad at all. Considering that that starting job likely doesn't require a degree, exactly what do you expect? I'm sure we'd all like paid $50 an hour at our jobs when we started out, but life's not like that.

It's a job. If Idaho doesn't want Buck, Ohio will gladly take her. Heck, the old Jeep plant in Toledo would be perfect!

Just think about it this way, the starting wage for a similar job in the part of Arkansas I'm from is only $6 an hour. I know people who are currently raising a family on $8 an hour.
