Since the new finish has been out a while I thought I would see what everyone thinks about it.

For me the look of the new finish in photos is nice. It really gives the knife a clean look. IF I was just collecting the knife's then I would love it. However since I use my knives, and I'm weird about things. I miss the way the tumbled gave individual character to each knife. No two knifes were the same I know I know . I have used my 3.5, 4.1 and 5 a lot! And you can hardly see any wear... If at all. When I got the new 5.1, I started using it. It showed signs of wear fast! not a big deal really, but I was shocked.

What Do you guys think? Like it, Love it, indifferent?

Three things:

1- I am also in the weird camp that for a "user", I prefer the tumbled but if I were to collect, the new peened finish looks a lot better in a collection display (my elderly mother actually had asked me if the blade was made from some plastic-polymer material because it didn't look like a metal alloy, but that's a story for another day :D)

2- most of the surface marks do clean up quite nicely with some Flitz or similar as long as the the coating is not scratched up by metal on metal or hard abrasive surface contact.

3- unrelated to this response, but you may want to keep that emoji for use in the Whine & Cheese section where it was intended to use in. It doesn't offend me, but there are some very innocent souls among us on here ;)

Lol. No not at all! I really appreciate it. I have a problem about not thinking of others feelings sometimes. That's why my wife must proof everything on my FB post. Otherwise I would only be friends with the people I served in the Corps with. ;)

To get back on topic, I am with you as stated but I'd love to hear from others who have extensively used both types of finishes. I am no authority on that debate in any shape or form because as far as Survive! is concerned, I still wear a diaper and I often wet it :D

I've been on record many times as preferring the old finish. Exactly for the reasons OP listed. Love the unique character each knife has after use, and it tends to hide scratches better.

Re: new finish, I've picked up some scuffs that have defied removal, including a black mark that wouldn't come out with 0000 steel wool and WD-40. That method started to remove some of the finish, sort of sanding it away. Any idea how the finish is produced and if it can be touched up?

All said, though, I'm using my knife and don't intend to display it or resell so I'm not concerned about the appearance. I'm sure my 4.7 will acquire more scuffs and scratches.

I no longer own any of my recently acquired 4.7s for the same very fear of, but then again were I compelled to use them the scratches would have earned them their own characteristics and terms of endearment. Just because they were not for me, doesn't mean anything in the grand scheme of things. My current preorders when fulfilled will undoubtedly come with all the advanced Guy & Co tweaks, so not worried about this at all down the long road ahead as those will be my keepers :)

I like them both but prefer tumbled. For all the reasons mentioned above. The new finish does have a certain sophistication about it though!

I'm surprised about the new finish wearing so easily. Does anyone have pics of blemishes from use or overall wear of well-loved new finish?

This is after light use. And it will not come off. I tried several things.

FANTASTIC!

Here it is after 3 to 5 hours of good hard carving, cutting and feathersticking. There's some patina from the wood but that can be cleaned up with anything that can remove pine sap.

I've heard the new finish referred to as "peened" which traditionally indicates hit with a hard piece of metal.
I suspect that it is some sort of hardened metal shot finishing process but I'm just guessing.
Guy restored a lot of knives from the 5.1 production run so I believe that dings and scratches could be removed.
I don't think cosmetic damage is covered by the warranty so while possible I don't think it is likely to be done.

Any idea how the finish is produced and if it can be touched up?

Guy is peening with ceramic shot last I inquired. My thought on it, is that it can be very easily touched up at the shop if the knife is returned to him for service, and is much quicker than tumbling. Also, it apparently closes the pores (rather than opening them like some blasting materials) so it should be more corrosion resistant. Combine that with the delta HT on the 3V, it's convinced me to try a few out in my salty wet Pacific Northwest climate.

Edit:

I should probably explain more as I have been a fan of blasted titanium years.

The important difference between blasting and peening is that blasting relies on an abrasive process which removes pieces of the material.

Peening relies on the plasticity of the material to pound the material as desired.

Since it is not abrasive, peening will remove less material and closes the pores creating a more uniform surface thus improving the surface finish with regards to corrosion.

So IMO the new finish is a better performing finish from the perspective of the manufacturing process and the corrosion resistance of the final product.

I miss the beauty in the tumbled. I would even opt for a non finish product. That way I can put a patina on it myself. ;)

Oh man.......... I trust Guy picked this finish for good reasons, but for some reason I thought it would have increased wear resistance. My well used GSO 5 still looks brand new aside from on kydex scratch despite my regular use. I don't need my knives to remain beautiful, but that's too bad they're so easily marked up.

Was all this in response for the want of sharper spines?

I know Guy wanted to be able to do finishing in house so maybe this is what needed to be done. Still... too bad.

EDIT: Justin's response is helpful, but I missed it before writing this.

Ricky, there is always the super custom program survive wants to do some day, email them and let Ellie know. Maybe she will add it to the list!
