I can screw up a dozen knives in the time it use to take me to ruin one!

At this rate, I'll need a bigger trash can...

So, I took ya'lls advice and got a KMG to replace my 10" wet grinder for this type of work.

The grinder came in, and I'm looking for the RS232 port (I think a few here will get this).

In all seriousness. The KMG is a good grinder. And thank god for scotch brite belts and the vibratory tumbler while I get accustomed to it.

Butch:
That you can get a near mirror finish on D2 right off the grinder without any visible screwups tells me you're wired special.

Here's a pict of one of todays better attempts:

I've got a ways to go before I get the look I want and I'm comfortable with the new grinder, but this dog can still learn new tricks.

I think the new KMG's come with a Optical port. Oh by the way it is behind your ear not on the machine.....:D:D

That's gorgeous---- Simple elegance and it looks very functional!

And I really dig the name... is that CNC'd into the blade?

Totally agree on the KMG. I am SOOO glad I added one to the shop. I am sure I'll be adding another one before too long. Ideally I'll have the Burr King set up with the "knifemaker attachment," KMG(1) with 10" serrated, KMG(2) with small wheel and integral attachment, and KMG(3) with rotary platen.

The Frink 9" disc will be added soon as well.

It's only money!!! :D

As Mike Snody would say, "a stack a bills yo!" :D

Nathan - looking sharp ! :) NPI . How did you get the signature and D2 sign on ?
How deep is it (looking 30 thou ).

Nice work Nathan! Looks good to me. I think I will build the clone KMG whilst I still have access to a CNC mill and scrap materials to use. Now, just working out the plans and to see if I can get the K(lone)MG modeled in Solidworks before I rush off to college this fall for a degree in mechanical engineering.

If that's your 'screwup', I give up!

No, that's not a screw up. This is a screw up.

Seriously. It looks fine in the pict, but there's a bad ripple in the grind. It is hard to take a pict of a reflection.

So, I went ahead and sharpened it. Now I have a really really sharp steak knife...

I know what caused the ripple and how to prevent it. But this is a learning curve for me. All my grinding in the past has been on stone.

This sig is milled into the blade. It is about .010" deep, which is probably deeper than it really should be.

I scanned in my signature and traced over it in CAD with NURB splines. I pushed the heavier parts of the sig deeper and pulled the lighter areas out more shallow and engraved it with a 1/32" ball end mill.

Ok, seriously, that's not that big an issue. I'm sure that all of us get those every now and again. They can be worked out most times. You aren't giving yourself near enough credit Nathan, that's a darned fine grind.
