The new Mora Garberg

i got to use the prototype today in the woods (only the knife no sheath at all)...first impression is it's built like a tank and after using it for several hours i like my 510 even more.

If folks are willing to spend $60 on a $13 911 with a blade that's 1mm thicker and called "Bushcraft", than I don't see why they won't rush to buy a more expensive Mora that actually does something different.

That said, Mora has well established what they can produce at low prices, and 14C28N is not such a premium steel that would explain why the knife costs that much. But it certainly isn't ridiculous. Probably comparable pricing to a Becker BK16 for something similarly useful.

Steel is according to Mora website is 14C28N . I'd rather have a polymer sheath as a knife in a wet sheath can cause rust.
Broader blade , full tang , obviously a heavy duty knife. I never buy a knife that doesn't have a straight handle !

I have watched Mora's gradual progression in the last few years to theoretically higher end knives. I just haven't seen any offerings to justify paying 6-8 times what the basic line costs. And they are still developing the basic line.

I agree with upnorth. I think it all started here.......

The death of the Mora 911!

Why did the 10 dollar Mora 911 have to die. It was a fantastic knife for the money, heck it's a fantastic knife anyway yea cut it (pun intended). The 911 had to die because of the "Bushcraft line". However at least the nice triflex wasn't overly more....well it was 20 bucks which was about double! LOL!

Take the 911 handle and reclassify it as "bushcraft" and then add a bit more steel. Presto double or triple the price. Heck anything "bushcraft" means 2x or more the cost! Maybe 10X these days. So this is a natural progression into an area in which IMHO isn't why I (speaking just for myself) buy a Mora knife. I am sure this new one and all the rest of the more expensive Mora knives are just fine however I think the true value is within the less expensive offerings.

All IMHO and to each their own.

For "bushcrafters", your best value in a tougher Mora is probably the HighQ Robust with its .126 carbon blade and modern sheath. The closest thing to a 911 is the 711, but the sheath is less useful and the handle ugly (but supposed to be very comfortable).

The 711/746 is the absolute bomb! Ok the sheath sucks for belt carry however is kinda nice in the pack as it has deep retention. The handle is the most comfortable of all the Mora knives IMHO (for me as to each their own).

And it is one of the cheapest Moras!

But geez, it is homely.

JV3, thanks for the comparison pic. Now that I see how much larger than the 510 it is, I think I'm good with the Mora's I have!

you're welcome! i had some time to kill tonight so took another comparison pic and some weights (from top to bottom): heavy duty (3.625 oz), garberg (5.625 oz), bushcraft orange (4.250 oz), 510 (2.375 oz).

I also can't tell you how often I had heard people say that they simply can't trust a $15 (or less) knife with their lives. Mora fans expect super-cheap prices but "you get what you pay for" is a huge factor of the market as well. The increased price is simply taking this into account, IMO.

So people are morons.
"I can't trust this cheap stuff!"
"We have knives made the same way for $60."
"Oh, that's better."

Could you elaborate on this more?

It looks nice but at $100 it's no longer the value that made Mora's so popular and now it's competing against better knives. Having said that, you can't blame a company for trying something new.
