The NEW Post Your Campsite/gear/knife/hiking/anything Outdoorsy Pic Thread!

[...]Long story short, I leap-frogged the pack AND the boat the whole trail. No problem really, just took my time, and I'm tougher-n-woodpecker lips.:D
[...]

Crafty, and tough!

Just got back from a backpacking trip, will post some pics later.

I did a mellow backpacking trip last weekend (thurs-sun) with an older colleague of mine. He wanted to do a trial trip to determine if he's up for hiking the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne early next summer. He's in his middle or late 50s I think (I can never get the number out of him, he might be on the cusp of 60). I think he's good to go, so I'm hoping we can make it out. We got a few laughs comparing his "old school" gear to my own. The fly for his tent is no longer functional, so keep an eye out for his shower curtains + clothespins improvised fly :D

New since the last time I was on this trail. A little amusing, and a little annoying at the same time, if that's possible.

A debris shelter erected in one of the sites at the trail camp we stayed at the first night. Needs waterproofing.

In addition to the Micra on my keychian (now replaced with newly received StyleCS), I had the Fallkniven F1 and SwissBianco Bushcrafter along on this trip. Both still reflecting their new status.

Second night's camp. We set up camp and took a break before making a quick out&back to Waddell Beach and the Pacific ocean.

Racoons can be a nuisance in a few of the more popular trail camps. Not so much a problem at this trail camp, but at the first night's trail camp, racoons managed to raid my friends pack and steal two granola bars. He figured he didn't need to add them to the hung food sacks because the bars were sealed. Either animals can smell the food through the sealed packaging, or his nearby toothpaste tube drew them to the pack... Needless to say, the next night, he made sure to hang everything scented. I got to practice the PCT bear bag method :)

While at the beach, my buddy saw a Yellow-Striped Racer near the guardrail to CA1. The aptly named snake was too fast for me to get a good shot, but if look hard you can spot it (or parts of it) in these pics.

This Banana Slug was hanging from a silky thread in midair, spinning with the breeze. I couldn't get a clear shot between the low light and it spinning around, but it was sort of fun to watch for a bit. After a while the line snapped and it fell to the ground.

We made surprisingly good time that day in returning to the trail camp at which we stayed the first night. I took some time to relax, lie down outside, air out my feet, and just take in the wind coming through the trees.

Heading home to HI for a week tomorrow. Planning to squeeze in a hike or two between some serious beach-ing and grub-ing :D

Is that Big Basin? It's been a while since I was there last. Nice place.

His pack reminds me a lot of what I carried in the 70s.

Yup, you got it  I forgot to say where we went :o.

I'm pretty sure his pack is from the 70s as well. It did the job well enough. He only ran into a little difficulty crossing under fallen trees and the like. He really envied my internal frame then, haha.

Owen - Does that river have a lot of water from springs coming out of caves? It is pretty clear. It reminds me of paddling on the Current River in Missouri, with all of the water coming from cave systems.

I'm glad you enjoyed it MG :)

And that water is pretty clear Owen. Looks like a real beat the heat trip. New camera shots, eh? :D.

Owen, what river is that? It looks a lot like my local Buffalo River here in SW Tennessee. Of course it also looks a lot like a lot of rivers I have floated including the upper forks of the Saline River near Hot Springs Arkansas.

I don't know about caves, but they are common in N. AL. The upper section that I had done before was too dry to be floatable. The levels actually depend on rain in N. Georgia, but the lower section had several streams joining it along the way, with good flow that was clear and cool, so I don't doubt they were spring-fed.

Codger, that is Terrapin Creek near Piedmont, AL.

Not great video quality between keeping the recording quality low to save memory, the light, paddling with one hand, and zooming in and out with the camera in the other.
We started hearing music and singing, and thought someone was playing a CD on a stereo system(it sounded really good). Actually got to hear three songs, one from a distance, one passing by, and another where we stopped not far past the grouped kayaks. They've apparently been coming out there on weekends for the last couple of months singing to the people kayaking and canoeing the creek. Not my kind of music, and I normally take offense to anything disrupting my outdoor experience, but I thought this was pretty neat. She has a great voice, and I was happy with the sound recording of my camera, too. She said they're called Dakota Creek.

I guess this is outdoors-related. The termite bond guy just left. I forgot he was coming, and parts of my house look like I've been dividing the loot from ripping off a sporting goods store. He checked the basement, then came back upstairs and said, "Mr. McMurrey, I don't normally look through people's stuff, but...it looks like you lead a pretty good life!" I wasn't about to tell him that I've just now let myself off the chain, trying to forget the first half of this year ever happened, but maybe dodging the marriage bullet again wasn't such a bad thing.

OwenM,

Don't know what happened. Ex took everything?
No. I've never been married, and will not be getting married any time soon. I dumped her 20 years ago for being dishonest and manipulative. We got back together last year. She'd supposedly "changed", and "grown up", but neither one of us had changed. It turned out she was still dishonest and manipulative, and I still wouldn't put up with it.
I just had gear everywhere, and thought it was funny that the termite guy seemed to think it was bachelor heaven around here...

If I'd had Rotte's motorcycle in my basement, too, he probably would have gone home and told his wife he wanted a divorce:D
btw, awesome pic, Rotte.
