Packing up to go camping with the family for the weekend. embarassingly I'll admit, I put more thought into blade selection that GPS, pack, boots, food, etc.

I'm carrying a folding knife, a mid-size fixed blade, and a big damn hacker.

for the folding knife...a peasant knife from Ragnar:

Everyone hates it but me, which just makes it that much cooler!:D

Fixed blade...BRKT Nebula, like this one:

For my hacker, I'll be taking my 18" HI Chiruwa AK pictured here:

Rather strange chemistry, aint it? :D

As far as guns go, I'm finding myself less gung-ho throughout the years. I'm leaving behind my trusty 1911 in favor of my unobtainium J-frame .357. I'm also very carefully considering trading out my beloved 870 for a Winchester 94 chambered in .45 Colt. (loaded with 300 grain Cor-bons)

Reason for the lever gun is that it's smaller and handier to live with and carry, my whole family can use it.

the area I'm going to has a crapload of black bear, but not many grizzly.
(although I'm sure they like to pop in every now and then to snack on a black bear)

Might sleep at the truck, might go on a little hike, probably do a little fishing, cook my wife her B-day dinner, etc.

Should be fun. Admittedly, this is a kinda pointless thread, but as much as we love to discuss knives and weapons in the outdoors, I figured I'd throw it up anyways...

I think going from the 1911 to the 357 for a woods gun is a good idea, revolvers are much more versatile and simple, I really like being able to go from snake shot to hardball with just a pull of the trigger. I would think about maybe getting your lever gun to match, one of the marlin 357s is a nice small package, with 38spc thru full house 357s you can go from squirrels to deer. I have a rossi repro 1892 winchester in 45 colt, the 92 frame is stronger than the 94, I put a marbles tang sight on it and have killed several hogs with it and am very pleased with it. I don't like the newer ones though, the fit and finish is not very good and they put a goofy safety on it that I hate. Chris

I just picked up a Ruger Alaskan. Makes a .45 feel like a .38. I think I'd still run the shotgun though. You just can't beat a slug.

My father in law has one of the Rossi 92's. It makes my Winchester look like a pile of crap. MUCH better fit and finish, plus the 92 was made around the short cartridges, whereas When Winchester decided to offer the '94 in pistol calibers they just rechambered the same old rifle that was built around the lengthier 30-30 cartridge, which unfortunately results in a much longer lever throw than necessary for my little carbine. One day he'll sell it to me....time is on my side...:D

For cartridge compatability, I've thought about getting a Ruger Blackhawk to go with my '94, that way I can shoot the Willy Whupa$$ +p loads in either weapon.

That little .357 of mine is actually pretty hard to love, but wieghing in at 12 oz or so compared to the 33oz of my Commander size 1911 it starts lookin' real good, real quick.:D

Here is a couple of jim stroh custom rugers and my rossi that I shoot some whup ass loads in.;) sorry for the crappy pic.

EDIT: If you don't seat that curved steel buttplate just right and touch off a 300 corbon it WILL bring tears to your eyes. :)

Too bad Garrett doesn't make any .45 colt loads. Their .45-70 stuff is just BOOM!!!

I HOPE, I will be able $$ to get a Marlin SS guide gun soon. I have a certain fondness for huge punkin' sized pieces of lead, making huge, deep, holes in things like hogs!! :D :D

Those corbons are pretty close! I shoot mostly Keith's load of a 255gr keith SWC I mold myself using magnum chilled shot over 18.5 grs of 2400, good load and kills very well. I had a friend who bought a 7 mag to hog hunt with, he shot 2 hogs and didn't get full penetration on either with a lot of blood shot meat and the guts looked like they were pureed in a blender. He traded it in on a guide gun and never looked back, I nick named that gun thumper and boy did it. Me and him killed a lot of hogs together, I was shooting a marlin in 35 remington, lots of fun. I really want to try one of those peasant knives. I didn't realize that Ragnar carried them. That'll make it a little easier for me to purchase sometime in the near future. I was thinking about getting one straight from New Zealand but I want to get a Mora and an Opinel, and maybe a couple of other things from Ragnar anyway, so I'll just add the peasant knife to the order when I manage to scrape together the money.
