Okay, its mid-Sunday. If you aren't walking around some great wilderness trail and taking pictures for us homebound folks then you are probably moping around or even worse - hanging around this virtual world of ours.

This challenge will extend through next week. The rules are - you are to take an old piece of gear. Old knife, older tent or anything. I want you to clean that babey up. Fix that hole in the nylon. Put a little elbow grease on the handle. Doesn't have to be something major. The whole point is to find something that was stuck in the garage or basement somewhere. Something that has lost its luster. Maybe something you forgot that you even had.

Clean it up, show it some luv and be proud of your crap :D

Oh - the point of this thread - we want before and after pics!

LOL, had me until the end. I think I'd get banned if I showed pics of what I was thinking of!
:eek::eek::eek:

I can't do that;)

Last night I we had some folks over and we built a big fire in the yard and the moon was out and the owls were yelling and they jammed out on mandolin, guitar and stand up bass till 1am so I'm still groggy today:yawn:

I HAVE already milked the goats and I have a truckload of manure I loaded up last night to spread on my garden today and then my other truck has 2 900 lb bales of 5th cutting alfalfa I have to put in the barn.

Today is my 23rd wedding anniv but the wife had to go speak to the legislature this afternoon:(

But I'm packing for a 4 day 3 night backpacking trip NEXT weekend so maybe I'll contribute some pics of that!

Okay, to kick start things here was my project for the day. I didn't know I was going to do this when I started this thread. In fact, I had a mind to clean up my combat boots - give'em the old spit and shine. But then, after a thorough search I can only find the left boot. So, moping around thinking how embarrassing it would have been to start this thread and not have anything to contribute I ended up with this.

My little buck diamondback. It admittedly doesn't get a whole lot of use, but it is stainless, sharpens up crazy sharp and I always thought it had more potential.

It didn't take too much effort to separate the rubber handle from the knife. It was a bit lose on its own, but generally stayed secure because I had a lanyard on it. Still, a full tang - impressive for a $10 knife (even if its is from China).

The finished project. Gave the knife and tang a bit of sanding starting with 220 grit, 400 grit and then 800 grit. I only worked at it about 30 minutes. I realize I don't have the patience that you knife makers have and I wasn't going to work out every score in the metal. However the finished product is satisfactory to me. Also decided to lose the rubber and wrap with my yellow cord. Finally a good re-sharpening with the Spyderco sharpmaker at 30o with a 40o microbevel. Easily shaves hair off the arm.

The wrapped handle feels really good in the hand, and the tang contours make for excellent grip (but far too thin without the wrapping). This thing would actually make a great little necker! Now, I just have to improve on the sheath. The original one really has to go!

I don't really have anything to contribute here—I"m in Florida for two weeks— but my Buck Diamondback came with a nice Zytel sheath, that it just clicks into. I love that little knife! I used duct tape on the sheath to turn it into a paddle-style rig, with holes for cord to put it on a Mercharness. Wish I had pics, but I looked around for it a few days ago and couldn't find it, I'm going to have to look harder I guess. Is that the smaller Guide model, or the bigger one, kgd?

It's nice to know it's a full tang, too. I love how great it sharpens up! That hollow grind is wicked. My brother broke the point on mine using it as a screwdriver (grrrrr) so I had to round it into a kind of bull-nose shape. I'll post pics when I get home and find it. :)

HI Kyp,

Yes this is the smaller version. These knives don't get a lot of press because of the 'China' manufacture thing. But just like the spyderco Byrd models, they really do have a lot to offer in a $10 knife. I think they are great. Doing this mod only reinforced that opinion. Maybe its a Chinese manufacture, but at least I know a good American country is reaping some profits from it! I didn't know they now come with zytel sheaths. I'll probably give my old pal Eric a call and get one of his custom deals. It will cost more than the knife, but a good carry system is about as important as the knife itself in my books.

Now, the other thing I did is really give my RC-3 a working over with the lansky, re-profiling the primary bevel. That also felt good to do and I love this little knife even more than before. But that would be a new is now new thread.

Okay - enough about my stuff...lets see what you guys found. Kind of like the 'antiques road show' :D :D

Oh BTW, it passed the sharp test. How do I know. Well my wife got a hold of it and decided to test it herself

Dang, I'm going to have to rename this thread - 'The old, used to be mine, but was stolen by somebody else....'

Hey John,
Keep making those budget hunters.....and it could be....;)

Nah, I think I'll spare you that sight.

Yesterday I put a handle on an Oxhead Iltis axe-head i bought from bensbackwoods.
I don't have any before or after pics though.
I had to cut down the handle a bit to get it to fit the small eye-hole.
Maybe i'll post some pics when i finish sanding it to shape and have the finish coat of tung-oil put on it.
You know kgd Canadian-tire had those Bucks on sale for 20$ a few weeks ago.
I didn't realize the tang was so wide under the grip.
I like Bucks anyway and now i wish i had picked up 1 or 2!

I don't have any before pics....and I did these a while ago...but.

Put new osage scales on these two old butcher knives.

Awesome Ilbruche - I always love your stuff.

Edit - Tholiver - yes you should pick a few of these guys up. They make good christmas gifts - especially doing your own mod.

Stomper,

Those Swiss Army knives look great.

I'm hoping to get a one handed trekker soon but really want it in a bright handled color, which they do not make. I may have to look into the feasibility of either rehandling it myself or having someone else do it into orange G-10 or something.

You might find a seller on ebay that sells the stay-glow scales separately.
I have for sure seen the 91mm stayglow scales for sale on ebay.
However I don't remember seeing the 111mm stayglow scales for sale there.
But i haven't looked for a while so maybe that has changed.

I wish they would offer the plus style SAK scales in stay-glow.

awesome thread man, Im gonna do some work on my canadian bayonet. Get a good edge and show YOU ALL! :D

Hey Fonly, I think you've done a pile of stuff in the spirit of this thread lately! Loved what you did to that kabar!
