The Old Rugged Victorinox Cross..... Pioneer content, grails and such.... Red Gold...

How does the Farmer's saw hold up under use? Of course it's got it's limits, but what I'm asking is under reasonable use do I have to worry about it developing blade wobble (the saw)?

No. I've never seen it or ever heard it even mentioned online.

Thanks for the review / comparison on the older and newer Pioneer. I like the Pioneer as a great great EDC knife :)

Have not heard of it happening to be honest. It is a well made and relatively inexpensive knife. If you haven't tried an Alox SAK, you should.

If blade wobble did develop you would be able to hammer the exposed pivot pin for a quick tightening.

Sunday bump of Woodrow's wonderful review!

I have a farmer whose saw I've used some (though not a lot at this point), but I have used the saws on my Hiker and Swisschamp a good deal, and none have ever developed any blade play in any direction. I would assume the pivot area on the Farmer is probably sturdier than on the cellidor-handled Hiker and Swisschamp SAKs. Like any saw blade, it's also a bit flexible, which might also reduce some stress on its pivot. I've used my SAK saws on limbs up to maybe 3" around, and they work great. Sometimes they can take a while and a bit of work, but they do cut much more efficiently than their small size would suggest.

With the new ones, I kinda hate for them to get worn.... especially the African Emerald. Wear just looks right on the Old Cross ones though.

Thanks for the great read. I have recently been bitten by the SAK bug too! I have been carrying one daily since April thru the summer. I think I have found "The One"!
I know that is a dangerous statement but I have stuck with that choice the longest of any since I came down with this dreaded affliction we all share.

The One???
Wow, a very dangerous statement indeed! But logically an alox SAK is one heck of a pocket knife. If I were not so obsessed, it would do for me. Though if Ihad a quarter for each time I thought I'd found "The One" I'd be living in West Palm Beach. :D

But, it's been done before, finding the one that is. I wish you luck!:thumbup:

So that's what that model is called! Thanks for that, I have one from Jake (supratentorial) that doesn't have a keyring.

What's a fair price for an old cross in good shape? I'd like to find one eventually.

3-4 years ago you could get a very lightly used one for around 25-35. Now it's 50-75 for a nicer one on the bay. Unused in the box can go for 150 to 175+.

I miss the 80's.

SAK Guy, great knives. I am drawn to the colored handled ones. I have a new electricians ALOX in silver and I love it. I cannot find the orange or green ones anywhere. If you could PM me or if a BF knife supplier sells them it would be much appreciated.

Less than ten years ago, I bought a red Alox Pioneer with the old cross, new-in-box, at a mall knife shop (which has since closed several years ago). They were having a Victorinox sale, and I got the Pioneer for $15. It was an impulse buy; I felt a bit guilty and almost returned it...! I'm so glad I didn't. Who would have known that within a few short years, they would become so sought after.
