The old Waves

I really wish they still made those. "Improving" the Wave was one of the dumbest decisions ever made, IMHO.

After I saw (just looked at them, didn't even handle them) the new ones, I went out and tried to buy a few more of the old style Waves. The originals weere one of the best multitools ever, IMHO.

I have 2 old Waves and 1 New Wave, and would never go back. The capability to interchange bits on the new wave make it a far more versatile tool for me. I vote new Wave, and keep on improving it.

Ebay has them occasionally.

Nice shots supratentorial. Which original, the one with the spring or the older one? I wouldnt mind the older one either. mine used to clack when I walked it was so loose.Sure opened easy though. I like the spring one. It sounds nice closing. Thats the only difference from the two I believe.

Thanks! Your photos were great also!

I wouldn't mind either one also but I'd probably go with the last incarnation of the original wave -- the spring was nice attention detail on Leatherman's part. The original leather sheath would be great also.

As far as differences, that's the main functional difference that I recall. They also added ridges on the back of the serrated blade to make it more easily distinguishable from the plain edge blade. Some more cosmetic differences are the smooth "bolsters" and textured "bolsters" (as you already mentioned). Also earlier ones are stamped "Leatherman USA" and some later ones are stamped "Leatherman Tool" on the pliers.

There are also different combinations, e.g. spring, "Leatherman Tool", smooth "bolsters" ... or spring, "Leatherman Tool", textered "bolsters.... etc.

their site still has the leather sheath for $6.00. The one on my belt says leatherman tool.

I prefer the leather sheath over the nylon sheaths. I use the flat nylon sheaths to play frisbee with the dog. :p

My sheath is so worn you can see the outline and the bolsters of the wave.Which one says USA the newer or older one?

Here's the reply I got from Leatherman. they seem like a great company

Dear Steve:

Thank you for contacting us regarding bringing back the old style WAVE. My sincere apologies for the delay in my response. I took vacation the week of Thanksgiving and am still playing catch-up.

While there are no plans to bring the old style WAVE back that I am aware of I will be sure to forward your e-mail onto our marketing department for logging and future consideration.

Sincerely,

It's too bad that the original isn't still produced but Leatherman made a lot of them and luckily there are still quite a few around. But I've stockpiled a few - just in case! ;)

I just lost the user in the snow while trying to get the axle pin in my snowblower last night. I don't want to break out the NIB one. I am lost without it. I have a traditional slippie but I have one every day anyways besides the wave.
