Today I was called to the scene of a motor vehicle accident involving a police car and civilian vehicle. As a I approached the scene I could see that the police unit was spun around 180º in the street and the civvy vehicle was up on the sidewalk. I know a good majority of the cops working this area of town so as I came up to the squad car I asked who it was. The other officer responded, "Collucci". My heart dropped. Officer Collucci is my younger brother. At this point I immediately went to the car and pretty much tore the door off. He was very suprised to see me. He usually doesn't work this side of town. I assured him that I was there for him and that nothing was going to happen to him. I quickly went to work assessing his injuries. He was complaining of some shoulder pain and pain on his right side but not much else. My crew grabbed the board, collar, and blocks and we got him out of the vehicle and transported to the hospital. I rode with him in the back the whole way. When we got to the ER I gave my report and we got him settled. Now I had to call his wife, our father and our broters. This is not the call I wanted to make to his wife. I assured everyone he was fine and that he was well taken care of. His wife showed up at the hospital as well as our parents and my youngest brother. I had to get back to work.

All in all he is fine and will be back to work in a few days.

Don't ask me about the other driver. She didn't matter to me at that point. The other crew took care of her. Family first.

It always worries me that when we get dispatched out it will be for friends or family. Glad to hear your brother is OK.

im glad he is ok. i can't imagine what must have gone through your mind when you were told who the officer was.

That would be frightening for anyone.

On the other hand, you have the satisfaction of knowing your brother got the best of care. :)

Geeze, Ken, better they got the call from you than from a stranger. I'm glad he's going to be OK.

(Ken goes through that all the time. I saw him come across a truck/bicycle accident when he was off-duty, and he put the same kind of dedication into saving the cyclist's life as you would expect of a family member.)

Geeze, Ken, better they got the call from you than from a stranger.

Exactly. And better that he got care from you than from a stranger. He knew the moment he saw you that he was in the best hands he could be in. You know very well that shock and fear have terrible adverse affects on accident victims. When he saw you, the fear and shock went away. There could have been no better medicine at that moment than you're voice. Any one of a million fireman could have put him on that backboard, but there was only one person on this earth who could give him the best medicine of all.

Know this, my friend, God used you in a special way today. Pretty neat, eh?

Ken,
I wish we never needed Policemen, FireFighters, or EMT's, but as your brother and family certainly felt, we are grateful for you when we do need you!

Glad your brother is going to be alright, sounds like he had great care. It's definitely better to get the call from family than from a stranger.

Stories like this again, in my opinion, emphasize how much we civilians take for granted our police, firefighters, and EMTs who lay it on the line every day.

Ken I am glad your brother is going to be alright.

Hang in there..

I'm glad to hear that your bro will be OK. I think the guys are right that it was better for the family to get the call from you than from someone else.

Also glad to hear your brother is ok. I first thought your story was going to be similar to what happened here last week. MVA involving two vehicles head on. Paramedics had to remove one of the deceased drivers who was a well known local paramedic. According to an announcement on the scanner, there was a debriefing and grief counseling session for those involved. Gotta hand it to you guys...hats off!;)

Glad he was OK and that you were there for him. I know he could not have been in better hands.
Whew ...

Update:

My brother saw the doc today and was cleared to return to work next week. He had a bad sprain of the shoulder. He is not on meds and feels fine and looks forward to getting back to patrol.

Here some pics of the car I took when I was down at the city garage.

Wow, that was some hit! He goes for defensive driving now, right? :D
He was lucky he didn't get it between the two points of impact.

Glad your bro is okay. Quite a hit on the rig.
