I'd been waffling on buying the WTG Grizzly on Knifecenter and on my most recent trip to the website, the knife has sold out.

Share your stories of heart break and redemption here. Where you may have lost out due to indecision and got a second chance to make things right.

My Buck Sprint Ops Pro. I saw it awhile back in a gift shop, one of the last places I’d expect to see a good quality knife. I had only just gotten my first nice EDC knife a few weeks before. I got to hold it and flip it a few times, and marveled at how smooth and easy it was to operate. Like you, I waffled for the longest time, until one day it was no longer in stock at KC. And I fretted. Then I saw it at the Buck store and pounced on it. I’m so glad I did, because it’s now one of my very favorites.

When those limited edition Benchmade Mini Crooked River knives came out, with the hunting themes etched onto the blades, the timing for me was bad. I had just dropped a lot of cash on some other knives.

Back in November of ‘09 , I saw a member on here post a pic of a limited edition BM 707 Sequel. I can’t remember the specs exactly. I know it had a CF inlay and S30V blade (which was a top tier steel back then) with a different color handle than the regular black handle. It looked awesome but couldn’t find it in stock anywhere. The member told me it was a limited run from years before. I was very disappointed.

Then , a couple weeks later in December , I saw that KW had a dealer exclusive of the 707 with light gray handle , G10 insert and S30V blade. It wasn’t as rare or prestigious as the CF insert version but it was close and I HAD to have it. So I bought two of them as a Christmas present to myself.

That was was an exciting time for me. I don’t have much excitement in my life as you can tell.

The inspiration for the Spyderco Advocate made by the man himself. Had this one in my watch list for close to a month before someone smarter than me scooped it. Definitely the one I let get away.

Not a specific knife, but a specific maker.

In 2015 I had been in talks with Alan Davis about a custom to commemorate my upcoming 25 years brain tumor free anniversary February 2016. However, as I was figuring out final details before putting in a down payment, I found my wife (now ex) had put us into a ton of debt, and that she also had debt I didn't know about as we were recently married. So not only did I have to cancel my order, I had to sell a bunch of knives (20) I believe to make ends meet, including a Brian Tighe custom mini Tighe Rod.

Lo and behold 8 years later a Davis folder comes up on the exchange for a very good price, and I jumped on it. It is far and away the best flipper I have ever owned. I just wish I had a larger one too.

In 2017 I had a Damascus Carbon Fiber Mnandi in my cart at BladeHQ for two weeks trying to talk myself into pushing the buy button. I had just bought my S35VN version and just wasn’t sure I wanted to swap it out or needed both. I finally decided to buy it but to late.

Been looking for one ever since and Ill buy the first one I see.

I bought 6 Benchmade 940 d2 carbon fiber limited editions from an online dealer back in 2003 for $120 per knife. Sat on them a while and noticed they were selling for 200+ so i sold them thinking I did pretty good. I checked ebay the other day to see what they sell for.....

Redemption #1
I hung on to my limited edition 940 SLV that i have kept brand new in the silver hard case.
Redemption #2:
Snagged a knifejoy exclusive Manix 2 in lime green and 20cv for $139 in the short window of time when they had 'em

Dear Lord, why did I think this thread was going to be an opportunity to talk about a woman? Misleading title!

Julie...wait, let me restart!

Hinderer Half-Track Battle Blue/Black G10 with a Bowie styled blade. It would be my XM-24's 'sidekick'.

It was there, then not, there again...then not...

I feel really bad about letting a few get away. I miss a Spyderco Wegner, a Trace Rinaldi Sharktooth, and a Carnivore Cub I traded away. They were all good and fair trades (and I met some nice folks in the process!), but I sure do miss those knives.

Oh well, that's what credit cards are for, right?

:D
That’s what I said in 2002. Since then I’ve added a few to the list, but I’m happy with what I kept.

Many years ago I ordered and received a Busse CABS. Satin finish with Black Paper scales and no choil. Sold it.
Their motto is “no regrets”
Not so

It really wasn't a knife that "got away", rather, it was a missed opportunity brought about by tragedy.
Mark Kee made a knife for me a few years ago, and I loved it. I was going to get another one made in a slightly different configuration, but I kept pushing it off. I emailed him a couple of years ago in August of 2021, and found out later that he had died in a flood that very same week. Kind of spooky and tragic.

At least I have one of his:

Saw this one on eBay recently and really wanted it, but I figured by the time I could sell a knife to pay for it, it would be gone. And it was gone a day or 2 later. Would’ve matched one of my favorite Hinderers perfectly… I’m a sucker for a sweet Bowie blade

Hopefully Someday I’ll get to try one… not in the cards at the moment

ETA
Does anyone else occasionally see a knife they “must have” and have a hard time deciding whether or not to list part of their collection up, in hopes that it will still be there when you have the money?
I contemplate that often, but when I see something just sold the next day I think “I’m glad I didn’t just sell a couple of my favorites for nothing”

Im still in the "throw money at the addiction" phase of knife collecting. I'm sure the bank account and wife will eventually reach a point where I'll have to sell a knife to get a knife.
