The one you wanted to be great?

Yup. Benchmade Griptilian.
Good brand, USA, good blade shape, size, and Sabre ground.
The scales are cheapy and my blade is off center
Plus, if the Axis lock gets lint in it. (Which is gonna happen) it gets bladeplay.

Spyderco Southard. After all the great reviews, I found it very meh. However, after all the meh reviews for the Domino I found that one to really be my cup of tea.

0561 just turned out to large to EDC and the deep pocket carry doesn't work for my use.

First time I went to the KSF storefront to buy a 0560, I left with a 0566. Second time, I left with a 0550. I can't get over how far the 0560 handle sticks out at the bottom of my hand. It's ridiculous. Beautiful knife, but I won't buy it.

I had something new happen to me yesterday. While digging around online, I stumbled on something I that looked like a dream come true-- the Microtech DOC. A Strider SMF sized flipper with a slight curve to the back of the handle?! Are you kidding me?!?!

AWESOOOOOMMMMEEEEbuuuuuuttttnnnnnooooooooo.

My knee jerk reaction was to simultaneously begin sorting out how to work $400+ in the budget and to check out reviews, just in case.

The reviews left me badly disappointed. Many pocket clip design complaints, fit & finish gripes, etc. While it sounds as though there has been a clip revision, one of the gambles with online buying is that I couldn't handle "my" knife before committing to it, and I'm not into $400+ gambles when I can walk into the KSF storefront and hand pick copies of many blades to ensure getting a good one. I'd definitely gamble on it if the feedback indicated CRK like F&F, but...

I am soooooo disappointed!

Have you had similar experiences?

I have one of the sub-700 ones that have the FU clip. I don't have a problem with it. Could it be a little more "comfortable"? Yeah. But they fixed it. But i'm sure most people that have complaints about gimping in general and the clip have soft and supple suburbanite hands.

In fact i don't have a problem with anything in the knife except the weight. I have exceptional hand strength so using the thumb studs wasn't a problem for me. People complained about that...but its a flipper. Its a lot easier now that its broken in.

Also...$400? I was able to get mine for just under $300 shipped from a big name seller.

Evilgreg,

"Meh" was pretty much my reaction to handling a variety of CRK knives, as well. I appreciate the F&F and blade to handle ratio, but there were no fireworks.

That seems to be a very common thing about them. 20 years ago they were some really special blades. However, they're old tech and manufacturing capabilities of companies like Benchmade and Spyderco have caught up to them.
I'd love to own one but i'm really hesitant to pay the entrance fee.

For me it was the Spyderco Southard flipper. I really wanted to fit in with this, but it just kept biting me when I went to pull it out of my pocket. The tip was too close to the end of the handle when closed.
Also, I have just got over the Lionsteel SR2. Everything about this is wonderfull until I attempt to close it. Very hard frame lock.
I still want the Lionsteel to be good. Maybe I just develop stronger thumbs.lol
Cheers

I really thought the BK2 would be great. I tried to love it! I really did... But, meh. Meh, meh, meh. It's just a knife that really does nothing worth a damn. Too short to chop well. Too big for smaller knife work. Too thick to slice well. Point too thick to stab well. Sure, it functions as a knife, but it sucks at EVERYTHING. The only thing it has going for it is that it's practically indestructible.

Much like the ESEE 5. But I still love it. I like to bring it to fancy restaurants and use it as a steak knife just to scare the hell out of people. Cuz, well, you know how the steak knives are at restaurants...I like to bring my own.

Benchmade 707-701 - it's thicker than the original! Why would they do that? At least I could sell it with (almost?) no loss...

Benchmade 943: the blade felt too light for me and the mass too much concentrated in the center. Let's see how the 940 will do. :)

Striders for me. The blade:handle ratio always ruins them for me. If they started making choil-free designs, I would be a very happy person. The Baby Huey is the closest I've found from them, but I really want PD1 or 3V or something if I'm going to spend that kind of money, and it's just been 154cm and S3(0/5)V for production models of that knife.

I was also sorely disappointed by my Will Moon and Hinderer knives. A dramatic price for what is currently not to scale with the quality differences between those and cheaper knives. Not to say they're substandard, but they're definitely not the end-all quality watermark or even well priced given the materials and competition.

On the opposite end, I was VERY surprised to find that my Emerson mini CQC-15 I had picked up on the cheap was such a robust and pleasant tool to use - so much so that I broke down and bought a CQC-13 at full price and carry it regularly, with the 15 having been lost until literally two hours ago when I found it in a shoebox I had crammed it in whilst moving.

Gec's uneven bevels, lack of a bevel on one edge. I ended up selling the Domino too. F&F was on par with CRK. Beautiful flipper awesome hand feel, fills the hand great. Could not compete with the ergos of the Delica or UKPK for edc. I wish I had never met the Delica. As it's such a good user it sours me on many of the better on paper Spydercos.

For me it was the ZT 801 and 561. I just found the blades too thick to be good at what I consider "knife tasks". It was more acceptable on the 561 considering the overall size, but still off putting for me. I was underwhelmed by the PM2, but it's growing on me. I really appreciate the blade's FFG and pointy tip, but I feel it is too large in pocket for the blade size. I thought the tip was a con at first, but after some thought I realized it was no worse than the tip on my Leek.
