The One You Wish You Had?

Second is a WW2 era large folding knife that had a liner lock. It came with a deer skin belt sheath. I do not remember the maker, but it was large with black synthetic grips/covers. It supposedly was used in the Navy, but it did not have a marlinspike on it
Sounds like the colonial USN C1 knife, but they had a blade and a saw blade.

Something tells me those aren't really "priced" at this point. You'd better bring some serious smoke to the trading table if you want to land one.

Lol...it really is a remarkable knife.

Yes, Harry, it's the variegated dye job on the bone that captures my interest, but I was never a fan of spear blades and
used that excuse to move it along. I can be awfully dumb, at times. 🥺

Case Bose pruner. I had one in my hands for $100 but chose the Yukon Jack ’cause it was also a $100 and all I had was a100 :( Almost bought one for $300 15 years later and richer. But the jackass dealer would only show one side, it was preowned and he charges a hefty restocking fee. I won’t buy from dealers like that.

There are two grails for me (grails have to be both extremely rare and extremely desirable) and both were first available at the 2015 GEC Rendezvous; the spear point Rendezvous Beer Scout (10 total in 3 covers) and the TC soupbone Beerlow (handful, 5 or 6?). Right place, right time and I landed a spear point Beer Scout (and in my favorite cover, blood red sawcut, 1 of 3). I once saw one of the TC Beerlows on the big auction site for what was too much money for me to justify the purchase…today it would be a good buy…for me, thats the one that got away…no regrets though as I feel quite fortunate to actually own one of my grails.

One of these early Victorinox in such superb condition. One is allowed to dream ... Image borrowed from a collector's group on social media.

I’ve seen them at a gun show, but it was a bigger show. I got one for $15 and gave it to a friend who’s a SAK knut, who has lost it :( Haven’t seen another since.

Wish I still had the Osage Abilene stockman that I purchased when they first came out years ago. I actually used the heck out of it when renovating the house and working around the yard that year. Nothing special; the handles were dark from use and all three blades were slicers that had been sharpened a bit and stropped often. In my mind, that knife defined for me what a traditional wood handled stockman was meant to be like.

I do agree.

Dan.

I guess I have a most typical (boring) grail, a GEC 77 Barlow, 15-ish clip blade, bone handle, preferably sawcut, most preferably copperhead sawcut bone. That's from the existing knives. But I really want to see them make the described variation in sepia sawcut bone (or something close to sepia).

I'd really like to find this one at some point...I've never even seen it let alone have a chance to acquire it. I feel like this will be the one I never get but I'll leave a spot for it in my display case just in case :) I've always wondered what the story was with this one...might have been a special knife for a good cause perhaps.

Have you asked Randy? Or Bill?

I've moved a lot of great knives to other porch members over the years, but think about this one more than most, maybe the prettiest knife I ever let go.

That is some beautiful smooth bone! Hadn’t seen that one before.

I made a similar dumb move back when I was first getting into GEC (2015 or so). The first GEC I bought was an Ancient TC Barlow in scratted parchment bone. After acquiring a few others, and with more on my list that I wanted to buy (this was back when many GECs were readily available on multiple dealers’ sites), I decided to sell the Ancient, because I didn’t love the blade shape. Definitely regret that one.

That said, one knife I’d really like to find is a #15 Farm Boy in Nifebrite acrylic. It’s probably my favorite GEC pattern — I have one in Antique Yellow jigged bone, and a backup in Rust Red — and my favorite handle material. The worst part is that I had an opportunity to buy one when I bought the other two, from a dealer at a standard price, and didn’t, because I hadn’t yet had a GEC in Nifebrite and didn’t know how much I’d end up liking it.

I’ve never seen one for sale, I don’t think I’ve ever even seen one shown off here. It’s like a ghost. 👻

Good intentions on your side, bad luck on his. But such is life, I guess ... 😅
