The only small fixed blade I need is a mule

The mules are so great that every time I think about buying some other small fixed blade I remember that I've got a mule for every occasion (plus one on the way). I've even got beater mules, you know, the ones where the steel in question wasn't your favorite so you don't feel bad about using it for anything and everything. :)
There are tough mules, wear resistant mules, stainless mules, and "oh look, they released another mule" mules. The handle shape gives a very positive grip, the blade is wide enough not to flex, and now they even sell Spyderco sheaths and scales.
I've got one in the kitchen, one at work, one in my tool bag, one in the truck.
They even fit in my pants pockets! (Okay, maybe I have large pants pockets.)
I love them so much I just keep buying them, even when I have so many.
A great knife and a great program, thanks Spyderco!

I could not have said it better! I recently picked up one secondhand in CTS B70p. What seems to be somewhat of a mystery steel and not a very popular option. I only say that because they were introduced quite sometime ago and they’re still available on the website. I have found it to take a keen edge and hold it quite well. I fillet quite a lot of sand bass with it.

One day I'm going to get a Mule, I think I'll save to have it pimped out with a custom sheath and scales. I think they're comparable to the Street Beat, which I find to be a perfect size, except they're a little more friendly looking.

dang I can't read s thread without more of those gorgeous scales calling out to me !

They look great as the rest

They are beautiful, nice work!

Thanks. A little hobby of mine.

Thanks, JJ.

To the OP... yes, the mulies are great blades. I find the handle is almost too curved. If it had a touch less drop in the heel it would be maybe a bit better? Just speculating.

When I close my eyes and hold the knife I find it to be incomparable. ;)
When I grab one out of the sheath the blade always goes where I want.
Much of the credit has to go to Halpern for making great (production) scales, but the basic shape was established by the Spyderco blade.
With handles the disclaimer always has to be that it feels great to me. :D

I never should have clicked on the link for this post. Now I want a Mule. I will just have to figure out where it goes on the 'I Want' list.

Hey Spyderco: can we get a production mule? Same buy-your-own scales & sheath model would keep things cheap.

Taichung S30V is fine, Golden CTS-XHP would be ideal!

The mules exist to test different steels though. There was a CTS-XHP Mule.

I do agree with your sentiment though, would be nice to have access to some of the better steels.

These days there always seems to be a mule or two in stock. Right now there are six!
All of them are selling for the same super low price.
A couple of the current mules use steel that is common in production knives, so you can have confidence that you know what you are getting.
I think that Spyderco has done a great job of expanding the program to make more mules available to more people.
The nature of the program is that once they've used a steel they are done with it, but there always seem to be another great mule coming out to replace it.
I don't think that they are in any danger of running out of alloys, particularly since they are willing to use similar compositions from different companies.

I’ve recently been trying some of the mules and I agree, seems they would be a little better general use if they weren’t so curved, but seem ideal for skinning type cutting. I’m really enjoying them so far!
