Update!

I finally got the courage to try to sharpen the beard. It's a very deep convex, and doesn't really make another cutting edge, but makes the beard incredibly sharp and, I feel, would serve to facilitate the "can opener" function found in rescue axes.

I'd planned to go farther, but I started getting really worried that I wouldn't be able to keep the grind symmetrical, so I stopped as soon as it was.
